Favourite Books Of 2013

Hey book nerds! :D Today I'm going to be sharing with you some of my favourite books of 2013! :) I have read so many amazing, wonderful and fantastic books this year, so it's going to be hard just choosing a few. However, I have also read quite a few books this year that I didn't like... I always feel very disappointed when I dislike a book, because I try really hard to like as many as I can!

Unfortunately, I'm only human (well, mostly) and I just can't like everything. I'm a picky and fussy reader and a huge critique when it comes down to it. :) I'm also a very emotional reader; the tiniest thing in a book can set me off crying for prolonged minutes at a time. This especially happens when I'm really engaged in the story and love the characters. (Also, you can add Animals into this as well!)

Please excuse the excessive use of Snape GIF's, this is the only time of the year I feel okay with posting them to relay everything I'm feeling! :P Well anyway, I hope you'll all enjoy my list for this year - I read 100 books - and completed my Good Reads reading goal for the year, so it's extra exciting. :D I hope you all have a wonderful new year, and start 2014 with a bang! :D Maybe you'll be as agreeable with my list as Snape is here. Who knows? ^.^

Review

First off, I need to say; Holy cow! Secondly; I never thought I’d find any contemporary novel with characters, writing and a plot line as good as Katie McGarry’s Pushing the Limits series – but I am so pleased to squash those thoughts as I was completely wrong! Wait for You is an incredible novel, with beautiful writing with an inspiring and heart-wrenching story. I had to force myself to not read this book in one go, and spread it out over the space of a week or so – as I didn’t want to rush it and have the book be over too soon. Needless to say, I was addicted to this story.

Wait for You

Avery is our main protagonist and I absolutely adored her. Not only is Avery smart, but she’s funny and kind – but she hates to depend on people. Avery has her own personal demons, which are revealed overtime throughout the book – and my heart just broke when I read about them, and how badly they’ve affected her. I felt like I just wanted to reach into the book and give her a big hug! As Wait for You progresses, Avery starts to open up more and you learn more about her character and you watch her develop into an even better version of herself – and she even becomes happier with her life. I thought Avery was a really relatable character and ticks a lot of boxes when it comes down to what I look for in a protagonist - I thoroughly enjoyed reading about her life, her issues and her first love, all of these were so raw and full of emotion that I just couldn’t put ti down.

Cam is the main love-interest in Wait for You, and BOY did I love him! At first, I was expecting not to like Cam at all, mainly because; he’s a jock and extremely popular – I just expected him to look down on people. How wrong was I?! Very! Cam is sweet, kind, swoon-worthy and funny with an ego the size of a house – however he doesn’t use any of these things to be cruel or rude to people. Cam is kind to everyone he meets, he may be way over-confident, but you learn that he uses it in a joking way – and doesn’t have superiority complex. I wish I could have my own Cam, as he’s the type of guy any girl would love to fall in love with – even if he’ll probably end up breaking your heart!

What I loved most about Avery’s and Cam’s relationship was that it definitely wasn’t insta-love. They meet at the very beginning of the novel, and although they seem interested in each other – they don’t get together until at least half way through the book. Their relationship took months to build, and they started off as friends and slowly became more – which is what made the book even more incredible for me. The romantic scenes in Wait for You are incredibly well done, with not a hint of cheesiness. They’re hot, steamy and will make you feel and think all sorts of naughty things! I didn’t just write that, did I? Don’t judge me! The romance in this book will blow your mind and keep you needing more, even after the last page is turned. Watch out for the feels!

Overall, I really enjoyed reading Wait for You; it was a tear-jerking, mind-blowing and fantastic book that made me laugh and cry, sometimes even at the same time! I really didn’t want Wait for You to end - I wish that It could have gone on forever, as I’m sure I would never get bored of reading about Avery and Cam’s lives. I couldn’t find a single fault with this book and J. Lynn’s writing is flawless and absolutely beautiful. I believe it well and truly earned the 5/5 star rating I gave it, and if I could give it more – I definitely would! Wait for You has quickly become one of my favourite books and definitely one of my favourite reads of this year. I’d recommend this novel to anyone who’s looking for a wonderful contemporary read – also for fans of Katie McGarry’s writing – as I think their writing has quite a few similarities. I can’t wait to read more from J. Lynn/Jennifer L. Armentrout in the future, and I can’t wait to read the next book in this companion series!

Quotes

My stomach knotted and I prayed to God, Shiva and Zeus that Jacob didn’t say anything that’d make me want to kill him later. - Page 87.

‘Oh, you know, mischief and mayhem,’ he replied.
‘That so reminds me of Harry Potter,’ Brit said, sighing. ‘I need a reread.’
We all turned to her.
Two bright spots appeared on her cheeks as she tossed her blonde hair back. ‘What? I’m not ashamed to admit that random things remind me of Harry Potter.’
‘That guy over there reminds me of Snape,’ Cam said, jerking his chin toward the table behind us. ‘So I understand.’
The guy with jet-black hair did kind of look like Snape. - Page 88.

‘Fuck, Avery. You think I don't want you?’ His voice came out low, almost a growl. ‘There's not a single part of you that I don't want, you understand? I want to be on you and inside of you. I want you against the wall, on the couch, in your bed, in my bed, and every fucking place I can possibly think of, and trust me, I have a vast imagination when it comes to these kinds of things. Don't ever doubt that I want you. That is not what this is about.’ - Page 271.

If I had any doubts about the seriousness of our relationship, they were vanquished that evening.
Cam brought Raphael over to my apartment.
Nothing got more serious than allowing a tortoise to crawl across your kitchen floor. - Page 290.

Excerpt

I side step the sink and turn. A guy leans against the doorframe, trying to appear nonchalant but his slackened stance indicates he’s attempting to keep himself upright. His brown hair is longer at the front and spills into his face, and unfocused brown eyes appear to be looking in my direction. He’s one of the regulars. I don’t pay a lot of attention, but he’s a good-looking guy and they never go unnoticed.
“Yes?” I snap. I’m so not in the mood.
His eyes sweep my figure. Unbelievable... I straighten my sleeves and look at him with an eyebrow raised.
“Are you Abby’s housemate?”
“Who are you?”
“Evan.” He rubs his nose. “You’re not a student?”
“Correct, I am the one not lying in a drunken haze on the floor contemplating my navel.”
Evan takes a step forward, steadying himself with one hand as my witty repartee sails over his head. “Why?”
“Why am I not on the floor pissed?”
“Why aren’t you a student?”
“Because I work instead.”
“Hmm.” He pauses and grasps onto the sink, searching for a glass. I pass him the spare one. “Did you fail?”
“Fail what?”
Evan fills the glass. “Or are you just not smart enough for uni? What is it you do?” He gulps the water in three mouthfuls then wipes his mouth with his hand.
Arrogant wanker. “That’s right, I’m not smart enough. I’m living with Abby until I can find a nice man to marry then I can have 2.4 kids and a house in the suburbs. Because, as I’m not a student, I have no future.”
Evan leans against the sink. “Fair enough.”
Oh my god he believes me. How pissed is he exactly? “So, you think anyone who doesn’t go to university is inferior to you?” I demand.
I’ve seen her friends looking down their noses at me. Inverted snobbery. On top of that, the locals hate students and the students hate locals. I’m neither. I can’t win.

We’re close now and he stinks of alcohol and pot, a faint hint of deodorant lingering on his clothes. Evan’s T-shirt has come untucked and rides up as he leans against the sink. He’s toned, evidently works out. I can’t help myself, I check him out. Beneath his curls he has deep brown eyes. Incoherent eyes. I hate to admit, but something about him is seriously sexy.
Even if he is a dick.
“Well, if you’ll excuse me,” I say.
He sniggers.
“What’s funny?”
“You sound like the Queen.”
Not this again. I get enough crap at work. I move from Cheltenham to Yorkshire and suddenly I’m ‘stuck up home counties girl’. I don’t dignify his comment with an answer and turn away from him, and walk out of the kitchen.
“Want me to get the guy out of your bed?” he calls after me.
I stop and look round. “You know him?”
“I could replace him.”
My mouth drops open at his arrogance. An attempt at a flirtatious smile plays around his lips but the unfocused eyes kill the effect he’s trying to achieve. He’s serious. I imagine he has a ready supply of eager girls. No surprise with a body and looks like his, such a shame he needs a personality transplant.
I step towards him. “Evan. I am not pissed. Nor are you getting into my bed. Good night.”
Feeling happy with my retort, I saunter towards the stairs. Behind me, Evan impersonates my sentence with an exaggerated posh accent.

It’s a good thing that I’m sober otherwise I’d go back there and punch him.

Title: Being Kalli.
Author: Rebecca Berto.
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult.

There are two things you should know about Kalli Perkins.
1. She’d rather do it in public than be alone with a guy.

Kalli doesn’t pretend to be a good girl. At nineteen, she’s never been in love and doesn’t ever intend to be. She has her issues handled. She’s managed to keep the secret of what happened to her nine years ago from her mother, although her mother’s usually high anyway and barely notices Kalli or her little brothers.

One night at a party, Kalli makes a bet with her friend, Nate, that could change everything. Their friend, Scout, tells them there’s no uncrossing the friendship line once it’s crossed—even though they were both drunk. But Kalli can’t imagine how anyone could want her damaged self for anything more.

She didn’t count on Nate. Nate’s very capable of satisfying her not only under her clothes, but in her heart, too. She just doesn’t know it yet.

My journey of reading this year has been a great experience and I've tried to branch out in the genres I read. ^.^

There have been some books I've hated..alot! And wanted to smack...

Others, that I've really liked! :)

And of course, the ones that are incredible! So much so, that I'd actually do a little dance... :P

Today's post, of course, is going to be my favourite books of 2012. Not necessarily ones that were published this year, but ones I had the honour of reading this year! :D The books are in no particular order, they're all my favourites of the year and it doesn't mean I like one more than the other. ^.^ Have a great New Year and try not to party too hard! ;)

Favourites Of 2012

Title: The DUFF: Designated, Ugly, Fat, Friend.
Author: Kody Keplinger.
Genres: Contemporary, Young Adult.

Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn't think she's the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. She's also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her "the Duff," she throws her Coke in his face.

But things aren't so great at home right now, and Bianca is desperate for a distraction. She ends up kissing Wesley. Worse, she likes it. Eager for escape, Bianca throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with him. Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out Wesley isn't such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she's falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone. And eventually, through this realization, Bianca begins to see how harmful her unhealthy way of dealing with her problems has been, and finds a way to confront them head on.

Title: The Summoning.
Series: Darkest Powers, #1.
Author: Kelley Armstrong.
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult.

Chloe sees dead people. Her 'seemingly' crazed behaviour earns her a trip to Lyle House, a centre for 'disturbed teens'. At first Chloe is determined to keep her head down. But then her room mate disappears after confessing she has a poltergeist, and some of the other patients also seem to be manifesting paranormal behaviour.

Title: Flawed.
Author: Kate Avelynn.
Genres: Contemporary, Young Adult.

Sarah O’Brien is alive because of the pact she and her brother made twelve years ago — James will protect her from their violent father if she promises to never leave him. For years, she’s watched James destroy his life to save hers. If all he asks for in return is her affection, she’ll give it freely.

Until, with a tiny kiss and a broken mind, he asks for more than she can give.
Sam Donavon has been James’ best friend — and the boy Sarah’s had a crush on — for as long as she can remember. As their forbidden relationship deepens, Sarah knows she’s in trouble. Quiet, serious Sam has decided he’s going to save her. Neither of them realizes James is far more unstable than her father ever was, or that he’s not about to let Sarah forget her half of the pact

Title: Delirium.
Series: Delirium, #1.
Author: Lauren Oliver.
Genres: Dystopia, Young Adult.

Lena Haloway is content in her safe, government-managed society. She feels (mostly) relaxed about the future in which her husband and career will be decided, and looks forward to turning 18, when she’ll be cured of deliria, a.k.a. love. She tries not to think about her mother’s suicide (her last words to Lena were a forbidden “I love you”) or the supposed “Invalid” community made up of the uncured just beyond her Portland, Maine, border. There’s no real point—she believes her government knows how to best protect its people, and should do so at any cost. But 95 days before her cure, Lena meets Alex, a confident and mysterious young man who makes her heart flutter and her skin turn red-hot. As their romance blossoms, Lena begins to doubt the intentions of those in power, and fears that her world will turn gray should she submit to the procedure.

Title: Dark Inside.

Since the beginning of mankind, civilizations have fallen: the Romans, the Greeks, the Aztecs...and now us. Huge earthquakes rock the world. Cities are destroyed. But something even more awful is happening: An ancient evil has been unleashed, and it's turning everyday people into hunters, killers, and crazies. This is the world Mason, Aries, Clementine, and Michael are living in--or rather, trying to survive. Each is fleeing unspeakable horror, from murderous chaos to brutal natural disasters, and each is traveling the same road in a world gone mad. Amid the throes of the apocalypse and clinging to love and meaning wherever it can be found, these four teens are on a journey into the heart of darkness--and to find each other and a place of safety.

But a normal date is hard to come by when Nash seems to know more about the dark forces behind Kaylee's power than she does. And when classmates start dropping dead for no apparent reason and only Kaylee knows who'll be next, she realises that finding a boyfriend is the least of her worries!
