Review: The Nightmare Affair by Mindee Arnett

The Nightmare Affair
Title: The Nightmare Affair.
Series: The Arkwell Academy, #1.
Author: Mindee Arnett.
Publication Date: March 5th, 2012.
Publisher: Tor Teen.
Genres: Paranormal, Mystery, Young Adult.
Format: Kindle eBook, 386 pages.
Source: NetGalley Provided By Publisher.
My Rating:
Sixteen-year-old Dusty Everhart breaks into houses late at night, but not because she’s a criminal. No, she’s a Nightmare. Literally.

Being the only Nightmare at Arkwell Academy, a boarding school for magickind, and living in the shadow of her mother’s infamy, is hard enough. But when Dusty sneaks into Eli Booker’s house, things get a whole lot more complicated. He’s hot, which means sitting on his chest and invading his dreams couldn’t get much more embarrassing. But it does. Eli is dreaming of a murder.

Then Eli’s dream comes true. Now Dusty has to follow the clues—both within Eli’s dreams and out of them—to stop the killer before more people turn up dead. And before the killer learns what she’s up to and marks her as the next target.

Review

The Nightmare Affair has to be one of the best novels I’ve read this year! With its fantastic and original plotline to its bold and fascinating characters – The Nightmare Affair is a book I found VERY hard to put down.

Dusty Everhart is a Nightmare – literally. Nightmares live among the other supernatural creatures in the world, such as; fairies, werewolf’s, vampires, sirens, mermaids, demons and more. A Nightmare survives by feeding on people’s dreams, seems pretty simple, right? However, when Dusty is feeding off a boy named Eli, from her old high school - the connection breaks and he wakes to find her sitting on his chest - awkward much? Before the connection is severed, Dusty realises that Eli is dreaming of a murder, and one of her current classmates lies dead in front of her. When returning to Arkwell Academy; a school for the supernatural beings, she finds that the dream has come true – her classmate is dead. Soon after, Dusty finds out why; she’s a dream-seer, and Eli is her seer partner. Dusty and Eli will have to work together through his dreams to gather clues about the murderer before they strike again.

Mindee Arnett’s writing is flawless. She created such an incredible world, taking hold of everyday myths of fairies and witches and transformed them into something completely their own. Mindee also created a whole new mythical being, a Nightmare. There was no stone left unturned when it came to describing the Nightmares, what they do and how they work. I’ve never read anything like this book before.

Dusty has to be one of my favourite characters that I’ve read about as of late. She’s stubborn, smart, witty, funny and kind. All of these characteristics blend seamlessly into Dusty’s personality and make her character very loveable. Although Dusty has only one friend, Selene, and the rest of her classmates in Arkwell Academy dislike her because Nightmare's are dangerous and outcasts – she doesn’t let this get her down. She also has a rocky relationship with her mother, but is very close to her father. I feel that it was a shame we didn’t get to meet Dusty’s father, because I think it would have created the perfect balance.

I loved Eli’s character. He seemed a bit rude towards Dusty at first, but can you blame him? He wakes up in the middle of the night to find a girl sitting on his chest – and is then thrust into a world he didn’t know existed. After he gets over the initial shock, Eli turns out to be such a sweet guy! He’s kind, a great friend and a great guy over all. Even though he’s always been ‘popular’, he hasn’t let it go to his head. He sticks up for the kid being bullied, stands up for Dusty when she needs it and is overall and amazing character that I’d love to meet. He’s cute, too!

Lastly, as for Paul; I liked his character, however, I wasn’t star-struck by him at all the way Dusty was. He seemed like a stand-up guy and is sweet, but I found that he was quite rude and way too forthcoming for my liking. Sure, he’s cute and Dusty goes all fan-girly over him, but he didn’t strike me as a very interesting or amazing with pretty much no depth to his character at all.

I loved how in-depth the world Mindee Arnett wrote about was. There are three types of Magickind in the novel; Naturekind, which involves fairies, sirens and mermaids - Witchkind; including witches, wizards and psychics – and finally, Darkkind; which include, demons, werewolves and of course, Nightmares. A mysterious force called ‘The Will’ prevents the supernatural beings from attacking each other, or using magic to hurt another being. The Will is a strong force, controlled by the rulers of the supernatural world, and keeps the world they know from crumbling apart at the seams. The entire world building was just fantastic and so incredible that I find it hard to put into words.

Overall, The Nightmare Affair was fast pace and action filled; immediately gripping the reader and drawing them into the strange world. The novel was shrouded in mystery and I found it hard to predict what would happen next. All the characters seemed suspicious, as if they had something to hide. The book, although based mainly on mystery and paranormal aspects, had enough romance and romantic complications to tickle my fancy and I loved how it wasn’t the main focus of the storyline. I believe the book truly deserves the 5/5 stars rating and it deserves nothing less. I can’t wait to read more of Mindee Arnett’s writing!

Quotes

I frowned, less than thrilled at the idea of being the government's shiny new gun. "So you're saying I might predict more than just stuff about the killer?"
"Yes. In the past, dream-seers have identified spies, uncovered assassination attempts, all sorts of things." So much for hoping this would be a one-time gig. I bit my lip.
"So we're like the psychic CIA." - Loc 688, 20%.

"You're a Nightmare," Marrow said as if this explained everything. "Your magic works differently from other magickind. You're the exception to The Will's rule. You just never had occasion to discover before now." - Loc 1338, 40%.

My gaze drifted up from the woman's face to the sky, where a huge bird hovered over the people's heads, wings outstretched. Like hearing the opening note of a familiar song on the radio, recognition hummed inside me at the sight of it. - Loc 2474, 74%.

Thoughts

I think this book looks incredible! It seems like this book is going to be a fantastic mystery/thriller book and I can't wait for it to be released! As for the cover, I like it - I really do - but I HATE the font they've used, I don't think it goes with the rest of the cover. I think it looks slightly childish. The picture looks really dark and mysterious, and I love how the girl is sitting the rain. ^.^ Have any of you heard of it before? Let me know what you think of the synopsis!

What are you "Waiting On" this Wednesday? Leave me a comment or a link to your blog post and I'll be sure to check it out! :D Happy Reading. (:

It's such a shame they all have to go to the bottom of my TBR pile, because I have so many other books I have to read beforehand. D: Oh well! Have you read any of these books? Let me know! ^.^

It's nearly 500 pages. ^^; It's really good so far, even though I'm only about 30 or so pages in. I have an appointment later today with my care coordinator and I'm really not looking forward to it, mostly because I'm so tired! I didn't sleep well last night at all. Oh well, that's it for now - I hope you all have a great Friday!

Summaries from Good Reads. I really want to get my hands on copies of all of these books - they look fantastic! ^.^ I think the one I'm most excited about getting my hands on though is The Betrayal of Natalie Hargrove. I LOVE murder mysteries/thriller books :) However, The Vampire Stalker looks incredible as well! As for the covers, I love the typography on The Cursed Ones, it's amazing. I like the simplicity of Boy Meets Boy's cover and my favourite cover is The Betrayal of Natalie Hargrove's - because the colours are stunning and the overall effect is amazing. ^.^ Have you read any of my finds this week? Review: Fracture by Megan Miranda

Fracture
Title: Fracture.
Series: Fracture, #1.
Author: Megan Miranda.
Publication Date: January 17th, 2012.
Publisher: Bloomsbury.
Genres: Paranormal, Mystery, Young Adult.
Format: Paperback, 261 pages.
Source: Bought.
My Rating:
By the time seventeen-year-old Delaney Maxwell is pulled out of the icy waters of a frozen lake, her heart has stopped beating. She is officially dead. Then she starts breathing...

The doctors are mystified. But Delaney knows something is very wrong, even thought outwardly she had completely recovered.

Pulled by sensations she can’t control, Delaney now finds herself drawn to the dying. Is her brain predicting death or causing it? Then Delaney meets Troy Varga. Is Troy a kindred spirit who somehow understands her weird and frightening gift? Or are his motives chillingly more sinister...

Review

Delaney Maxwell is crossing a frozen lake one day when she slips and falls, fracturing the ice and falling into its dark and dangerous depths. Unable to find the surface, Delaney drowns and is rescued 11 minutes later from the water by her best friend, Decker. She should be dead, shouldn’t she? However Delaney breaks the odds, lives but is in a coma for 6 days. Technically she’s brain damaged, she shouldn’t be able to speak, walk or do any of the normal day to day things when she wakes up – but she can. Nothing seems to be wrong with her, but something seems to have changed in Delaney. She finds herself unknowingly drawn to the dying – a new found sense that will change her life forever.

Fracture was a really good read; I read it in only two sittings and was constantly being drawn more and more into the story. However; I did find that it was quite rushed at times. I also felt it could have been written a bit more smoothly and less erratically. It often jumped from one thing to another and I found myself confused as to what was happening. I also have to say I was also a little disappointed in it. However, that’s mostly my fault, because I went into reading this book with really high expectations, expecting an incredible, unforgettable read and it came up short slightly with a few faults that really niggled at me.

Delaney’s character was a bit of a see-saw to me. Some of the time I really liked her, and the rest of the time I found her really annoying. She drove me crazy by the things she did and the way she acted. She makes some stupid decisions and says a lot of the wrong things, but putting that all aside she was a very caring and kind character. Decker’s character was great! He was so sweet, kind, sensitive and caring that you couldn’t help but love him. He also makes some mistakes in the books, but you can tell he really finds himself paying for them emotionally. The friendship Delaney and Decker have is rare and wonderful and I can’t help but feel jealous of their relationship. The pair hit some rocky grounds throughout the book, but when it comes to the punch; they’re always there for each other.

Lastly; as for Troy – I have to say, I never really liked his character from the start. He seemed a bit stalkerish and big-headed. How did he have the right to do what he did? He seemed to genuinely like Delaney, even when he was acting like an idiot. In the end his character was alright, but very erratic and unpredictable. I loved how the ending of the book turned out – it was perfect in my opinion. It had enough drama and suspense to keep me turning the pages quickly, and I had no idea what would happen! I felt like the end of the book could go in multiple different ways. The book was constantly surprising me and I could only guess as to what would happen next.

This is one of those rare occasions where I can't decide between giving a book 3.5/5 stars and 4/5 stars. Seeing as I can't decide, and I’m not usually one for giving half stars; I'm just leaving it how it is. Even if the rating was a bit lower, it does not detract from the greatness of this book and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a relatively short but interesting and creative story.

Overall I really did enjoy reading this book, it had its ups and downs but it was fantastic otherwise. It had such an original and unique plotline and delves into some very sensitive subjects such as depression and death. I believe these subjects were handled perfectly and Megan Miranda’s writing was beautiful. I think that it would have stood perfectly as a stand-alone novel, I’m not really sure what I think of it becoming a series – but I suppose I’ll just have to wait and find out what the sequel brings.

Quotes

My ear was pressed against the surface, so I heard the fracture branch out, slowly at first, then with more speed. Faint crackles turned to snaps and crunches, and then silence. - Page 06.

"I don't know whether you're acting like this because you know I'm going to kiss you and you're anxious or you know I'm going to kiss you and you don't want me too." - Page 138.

Troy looked at me with a slightly sideways expression. He leaned forward and whispered, "You're..." He clenched and unclenched his fists, and I knew what he was thinking. I was the girl who ran when she got spooked. I was the girl who hid in the back of the funeral home. I was the girl who had to be saved from the lake. He hadn't gotten to know me, really. He didn't know I wasn't stupid. I was smart. I knew what I was doing. - Page 240.

Southpointe High is the last place Lucy wanted to wind up her senior year of school. Right up until she stumbles into Jude Ryder, a guy whose name has become its own verb, and synonymous with trouble. He's got a rap sheet that runs longer than a senior thesis, has had his name sighed, shouted, and cursed by more women than Lucy dares to ask, and lives at the local boys home where disturbed seems to be the status quo for the residents.

Lucy had a stable at best, quirky at worst, upbringing. She lives for wearing the satin down on her ballet shoes, has her sights set on Juilliard, and has been careful to keep trouble out of her life. Up until now. Jude's everything she needs to stay away from if she wants to separate her past from her future. Staying away, she's about to find out, is the only thing she's incapable of. For Lucy Larson and Jude Ryder, love's about to become the thing that tears them apart.

Summaries from Good Reads. I really want to get my hands on all of these books, they all look amazing! Crash has become a really popular book lately, and as for Witch Burn, I got sent an e-galley of the sequel via Net galley, so I really want to read the first book. :) The book I'm probably most excited for thought is either The Vincent Boys or Crash. As I keep saying, I really love contemporary books right now. ^.^ Have you read any of my finds this week?

Waiting On Wednesday: Pretty Girl-13 by Liz Coley

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Hello again, Book Nerds! ^.^ I'm back again to do another post today (two in one day, SHOCKING!). My previous post earlier was a cover reveal for a upcoming release, so if you guys are interested in seeing that, then just click the home button and scroll down. :) Any who, I woke up this morning to my dad de-icing the freezer - it scared the crap out of me. xD Definitely not the awakening I expected. :P

Pretty Girl-13

Title: Pretty Girl-13.
Author: Liz Coley.
Expected Publication: April 29th, 2014.
Publisher: Harper Teen.
Genres: Mystery, Thriller, Young Adult.

Reminiscent of the Elizabeth Smart case, Pretty Girl-13 is a disturbing and powerful psychological mystery about a girl who must piece together the story of her kidnapping and captivity.

Angie Chapman was thirteen years old when she ventured into the woods alone on a Girl Scouts camping trip. Now she's returned home…only to find that it's three years later and she's sixteen-or at least that's what everyone tells her.
What happened to the past three years of her life? Angie doesn't know.

But there are people who do—people who could tell Angie every detail of her forgotten time, if only they weren't locked inside her mind. With a tremendous amount of courage, Angie embarks on a journey to discover the fragments of her personality, otherwise known as her "alters." As she unearths more and more about her past, she discovers a terrifying secret and must decide: When you remember things you wish you could forget, do you destroy the parts of yourself that are responsible?

Liz Coley's alarming and fascinating psychological mystery is a disturbing-and ultimately empowering-page-turner about accepting our whole selves, and the healing power of courage, hope, and love.

Teaser Tuesday #20

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly book meme hosted by MizB from Should Be Reading. Grab your current read, open to a random page and share two “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page - remember, no spoilers!

Hey Book Nerds! :3 How are you all doing today? I'm feeling much, much better! :) My sore throats gone and my chest infection have pretty much cleared up. As I'm writing this, I've got the hiccups and ever so often I mistype something. xD Any who, a twitter follower of mine mentioned that there was a half-price WHSmith voucher online that will let me get Dance of Shadows by Yelena Black for only £3.50 so I jumped at the opportunity. Unfortunately, when I went into my local WHSmith they had sold out of all of them! D: They're going to order some more in this week and hopefully I can pick myself up a copy next Tuesday. :)

He tried to prop himself up on one elbow but ended up flopping back down beside me. His breaths were coming too quickly, and his skin was now more pallid than mine. Of course, I had become rosy and flushed with the life I'd stolen from the guy I loved.

Thoughts

I love Claudia Gray's writing and I'm in love with her Evernight series! :) I read the first two books a few months ago and I'm finally getting round to reading this third instalment. I'm about 50 pages off being half-way done with reading Hourglass and I love it so far. Bianca's a great character and I love Lucas, he seems really dreamy. :3 Anyway, I love this book so far, it’s great and I can’t wait to find out what happens next. ^.^

Review: Anthem For Jackson Dawes by Celia Bryce

Anthem For Jackson Dawes
Title: Anthem for Jackson Dawes.
Author: Celia Bryce.
Publication Date: January 1st, 2013.
Publisher: Bloomsbury.
Genres: Contemporary, Young Adult.
Format: Paperback, 230 pages.
Source: Provided By Publisher.
My Rating:
When Megan Bright arrives in hospital for her first cancer treatment, there is only one other teenager there – Jackson Dawes. He is cute, rebellious...and infuriating. Even so, Megan finds herself slowly and surely drawn to him.

But so is everybody. Jackson is a whirlwind of life and energy, warmth and sparkle. Megan will need some of his extraordinary optimism as they face the difficult times ahead.

An uplifting story of bravery, loss and love against the odds.

Review

I was sent a copy of this book by Bloomsbury publishing in exchange for an honest review.

Megan Bright has just been diagnosed with cancer and is admitted to a children’s ward in hospital to undergo treatment. She’s sullen, upset that it’s messing with her life and annoyed by all the dancing elephants on the walls and babies on the ward. Megan’s so secluded and frustrated that she doesn’t notice Jackson Dawes until he runs into her; literally! Whilst everyone is star-struck by Jackson and his happy-go-lucky personality – including her mother - Megan would rather roll her eyes and try to ignore him. Except; Jackson doesn’t get ignored, ever.

Jackson keeps pushing, and slowly his contagious personality wears Megan down. He fills her drab and dreary world with colour and lights, distracting her from the foreboding treatment she’s undergoing. Jackson seems like the only one who understands what she’s going through and they grow closer and closer with each and every day. All this is good, considering the tricking times ahead they both will have to face.

Anthem for Jackson Dawes was an interesting novel to read with a very emotional storyline. I was expecting a blossoming romance between Megan and Jackson, but I was disappointed to find that the romance was very thin on the ground. The book suggests a budding relationship, but from how I read it, there was a beautiful friendship with no proper romance at all; which was sad, but not the end of the world.

I’m still a bit on the fence on how I feel about Megan’s character. Her personality wasn’t overly well developed and she acted very stroppy and rude at the beginning of the novel. However, as the book progresses, she does develop and transforms into a much nicer, more carefree character. Her entire change is all to do with Jackson. At first, Megan doesn’t want to accept she has cancer, and acts like no one else in the entire world can understand how she’s feeling. But slowly and surely, Jackson creeps under her skin, lifting her spirit and bringing light back into her life. Even though by the end of the book we still don’t know a whole lot more about Megan, I believe we have a better understanding of her.

Jackson is a ray of light, bursting through the sky and a whirlwind exploding into hundreds of different colours. He is such a bubbly character and I loved this determination to break the rules and to try and live every day as if it were his last. Jackson is loved especially by the little kids, he tells stories and plays games with them to try and distract them from the bad cancer cells. Even though the book doesn’t really go into much more detail about Jackson’s character either, I thought he was really memorable and had this charm and way about him that made you unable to hate him and his optimism.

There were a few aspects of this book that really annoyed me, but the thing that I kept picking up on the most was; ‘Will I get a nurse?’ and ‘Will I come round there?’ This phrasing was used quite a bit and thoroughly frustrated me. First off; it’s doesn’t make sense – the correct way to say the sentence should be; ‘Shall I get a nurse?’ or ‘Shall I come round there?’ I’m a big fan of punctuation and grammar and this really bugged me every time someone spoke like it throughout the book. Now, this maybe the way the people talk in the book from their part of the country, but I’ve never heard anyone speak like that before.

Overall, I really did enjoy reading this book, it made me cry but I wasn’t connected to the book as I thought I would be. The writing, albeit lovely at times, was also rather confusing and I found it frustrating that it skipped from one scene to another so quickly. I believe that writing about the whole concept of being in hospital for chemo is a tricky and sensitive subject, but Celia writes about it in a truthful and honest way. I also believe that, given the subject matter and the fact that there can’t be a whole lot of variation to it, she did an excellent job. If it weren’t for those these things that nagged me, this book would of easily gotten a 4/5 stars. However, those things are there and I think that my 3/5 stars rating reflects that it’s a great novel, even with its fault. Celia Bryce is definitely a writer to look out for and I would recommend Anthem for Jackson Dawes to anyone who loves to have their heart broken. (In a good way of course!)

Quotes

Kipper sniffed and snuggled in a little nearer, so that Megan could feel every angle of the girl's body next to hers and the smooth bald head burrowed under her chin. It felt remarkably warm and not quite bald, but slightly downy, like a baby's. - Page 71.

Megan watched as everything about her, everything that said who she was, slid down her shoulders and cascaded to the floor, like leaves shaken from a dying tree. - Page 125.

Megan sat in Jackson's chair, in the hollow that he'd made, so that it held her, hugging her whole body. She laid her hands on the armrests where his fingers sometimes tapped out a tune, found herself pecking at the wood with her nails. She breathed, slowly and deeply, the air Jackson had breathed that very morning. She could almost feel him there in the room, as if he'd left some part of himself behind, just for her. - Page 155.

Summaries from Good Reads. All these books look incredible. :D I've entered a competition to win a copy of Blink Once, but if I don't win it, I'm definitely picking myself up a copy from Amazon. :P Level 2 has been talked about so much lately – and I think it looks fantastic! I believe the author is actually a Book Tuber which is extra awesome. :P As for When You Were Mine - it looks so epic, I'm a big fan of Romeo and Juliet, and it's a retelling of it. ^.^ Lastly; as for Lost In Thought I'm probably going to purchase a kindle copy of it because it's so much cheaper. :P I love mind-reading stories, they’re so interesting. :) Have you read any of my finds this week?
