Waiting On Wednesday: Dead Jealous by Sharon Jones

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Hey Book Nerds! ^.^ How are you all doing today? I'm sorry I've been so pre-occupied and things lately, I've been a bit down and distracted. However, I hope to get back more into this blog very soon! :D I'm still reading Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac, and I have to say - it's pretty good. :) It's not amazed me yet, but I'm sure it'll get better. ^.^ I hope you're all enjoying your week so far. :D

Dead Jealous

Title: Dead Jealous.
Series: Poppy Sinclair, #1.
Author: Sharon Jones.
Expected Publication: July 4th, 2013.
Publisher: Orchard Books.
Genres: Mystery, Thriller, Young Adult.

People think of Mother Nature as a gentle lady. They forget that she's also Death...

Sixteen-year-old Poppy St John believes in quantum particles, not tarot cards, in Dawkins, not druids. Last summer, in a boating accident in the Lake District, Poppy had a brush with death. But the girl she finds face down in Scariswater hasn't been so lucky.

As she fights to discover the truth behind what she believes is murder, Poppy is forced to concede that people and things are not always what they seem and, slipping ever deeper into a web of lies, jealousy and heart-stopping danger, she comes to realise - too late - that the one thing that can save her has been right there, all the time.

Thoughts

I REALLY love the looks of this book, it looks fantastic. I am a huge sucker for murder mysteries; I think they're so fun to read. :P I'm not sure if that's really a good thing though... ^^; Anyway, I really can't wait for the release of this book. :) As for the cover, I'm really not that keen on it at all! D: I LOVE the typography, but that's its only redeeming quality I'm afraid. What do you guys think?

What are you "Waiting On" this Wednesday? Leave me a comment or a link to your blog post and I'll be sure to check it out! :D Happy Reading. (:

Teaser Tuesday #25

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly book meme hosted by MizB from Should Be Reading. Grab your current read, open to a random page and share two “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page - remember, no spoilers!

Hey Book Nerds! :3 I finished reading When It Happens last night, and I thought it was quite a good book. ^.^ I went into town today and I found this gorgeous small teapot; it's pink with cherry blossoms on! :D I know it's not book related but I love it and I only paid £2 for it. :) If you guys haven't already guessed, I'm obsessed with all things japanese or just asian in general. I hope you're all having/had a good day, sorry this post is so late - I forgot to post it. ^^;

Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac
Title: Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac.
Author: Gabrielle Zevin.
Genres: Contemporary, Young Adult.
Understanding adoption requires a basic understanding of sex, something I would not of had until third grade when Gina Papadakis bought her grandparents' disturbingly dog-eared copy of The Joy Of Sex to school. She passed it around at lunch and while most everyone else was gagging with the realization that their parents had done that to make them (so much hair, and the people in the drawings were not one bit joyful...), I felt perfectly fine, even a little smug. I might be adopted, but at least my parents hadn't degraded themselves like that for my sake.

Thoughts

I've only just started reading this book. So again, I can't give an honest opinion on what it's like yet. :P However it does look like it's going to be a great book! :D The cover is also quite cool, I do prefer it to the American and Hardback cover, it's more fun and looks like it will fit the storyline of the book. ^.^ Have you read Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac before?

What are your teasers for this Tuesday? Leave me a comment or a link to your blog post and I'll be sure to check it out! :D Happy Reading. (:

Friday Finds #24

Friday finds is a meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading which showcases the books you've recently ‘found’ and added to your To Be Read (TBR) list.

Hey Book Nerds! :3 How are you all doing today? :) I'm so sorry this post is so late today, I had an appointment earlier and I just forgot the time and I only remembered I needed to do this post about 10 minutes ago. ^^; Anyway, I finally managed to post my review of Light of the Moon by David James yesterday. So if you've not managed to check it out, please do so! ^.^ There's not much else to say today, I hope you've all had/are having a great day. :D

Friday Finds

The Infects by Sean Beaudoin.
Seventeen-year-old Nero is stuck in the wilderness with a bunch of other juvenile delinquents on an “Inward Trek.” As if that weren’t bad enough, his counselors have turned into flesh-eating maniacs overnight and are now chowing down on his fellow miscreants. As in any classic monster flick worth its salted popcorn, plentiful carnage sends survivors rabbiting into the woods while the mindless horde of “infects” shambles, moans, and drools behind. Of course, these kids have seen zombie movies. They generate “Zombie Rules” almost as quickly as cheeky remarks, but attitude alone can’t keep the biters back.
Serving up a cast of irreverent, slightly twisted characters, an unexpected villain, and an ending you won’t see coming, here is a savvy tale that that’s a delight to read—whether you’re a rabid zombie fan or freshly bitten—and an incisive commentary on the evil that lurks within each of us.

The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden (Coincidence, #1) by Jessica Sorensen.
There are those who don’t get luck handed to them on a shiny platter, who end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, who don’t get saved. Luck was not on Callie’s side the day of her twelfth birthday when everything was stolen from her. After it’s all over, she locks up her feelings and vows never to tell anyone what happened. Six years later her painful past consumes her life and most days it’s a struggle just to breathe.

For as long as Kayden can remember, suffering in silence was the only way to survive life. As long as he did what he was told, everything was okay. One night, after making a terrible mistake, it seems like his life might be over. Luck was on his side, though, when Callie coincidentally is in the right place at the right time and saves him. Now he can’t stop thinking about the girl he saw at school, but never really knew. When he ends up at the same college as Callie, he does everything he can to try to get to know her. But Callie is reserved and closed off. The more he tries to be part of her life, the more he realizes Callie might need to be saved.

Raised By Wolves (Raised by Wolves, #1) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes.
At the age of four, Bryn watched a rogue werewolf brutally murder her parents. Alone in the world, she was rescued and taken in by the mysterious Callum, the alpha of his werewolf pack. Now fifteen, Bryn’s been raised as a human among werewolves, adhering to pack rule (mostly). Little fazes her. But the pack’s been keeping a secret, and when Bryn goes exploring against Callum’s direct orders, she finds Chase, a newly turned teen Were locked in a cage. Terrifying memories of the attack on her mom and dad come flooding back. Bryn needs answers, and she needs Chase to get them. Suddenly, all allegiances to the pack no longer matter. It’s Bryn and Chase against the werewolf world, whatever the consequences.

Hard to Resist (Hard to Resist, #1) by Shanora Williams.
Natalie Carmichael thought that Bryson Daniels would be her world. She planned a bright future with him, cherished four years with him, and couldn't have been any happier, but during graduation night, all of that changes. Natalie walks in on Bryson cheating on her. One month after catching him in the act, she finally decides to make an escape by leaving for Florida.

She wants to start over, have fun, and be free while also finding a way to mend her broken heart but when she meets Nolan Young, her single-life escapade doesn't last for very long. She tries to stay clear of Nolan and his desires but it's impossible for her. Nolan will do everything that he can to have her as his own, but will Natalie accept Nolan along with the problems of his past? Will she let someone else into her heart that may be even worse than Bryson? For Natalie, Nolan will be something completely new to her. And for them both, their desires will be completely hard to resist.

Thoughts

Summaries from Good Reads. Hard to Resist and The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden are books I'm most probably going to get in eBook format, mainly because they're so much more expensive in paperback. :P I think Hard to Resist is also a New Adult novel, so for any of you younger readers - be warned. ^.^ I LOVE the looks of all of these books and want them in possession now! :3 I also think all the covers are awesome, and I think my favourites are the first two. Although, the cover for Hard to Resist is also really hot. :P Have you read any of my finds this week? Let me know!

Review: Light of the Moon by David James

Light of the Moon
Title: Light of the Moon.
Series: Legend of the Dreamer, #1.
Author: David James.
Publication Date: November 6th, 2012.
Publisher: Create Space.
Genres: Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Young Adult.
Format: .pdf eBook, 373 pages.
Source: eARC Provided By Author.
My Rating:
Stars. Fire. Blood. Magic.

One night long ago, a constellation disappeared and fell from the sky in the form of a boy.
Secrets are being kept in the sleepy town of Lakewood Hollow, Colorado. Nothing but pools of blood and dripping words are left where bodies once were, and no one but Calum Wade seems to be worried. Life unfolds in shades of red for Calum, until a mysterious girl named Kate Black enrolls at his school and everything changes. Suddenly a dangerous world of dream demons, elemental enchanters, and blood witches unfurls before Calum. He learns that the stars have forever held his destiny, and that the constellations above are much more than what they seem.

As Kate and Calum sink deep into a paranormal war, they realize that an ancient prophecy might hold the answers they seek. But life is not so easy for Calum, and he can feel his heart beat faster whenever Kate is close. Worse, Kate's blood holds a dark secret even more dangerous than the war between the demons and enchanters. Soon the two find that there are worse things than loving someone you shouldn't. For Calum and Kate, even love and the fiery power of stars may not be enough to break a curse as dark as the blood that binds their destiny.

Review

Don’t you see that tears, feelings, make you stronger? Loving and losing and hating and caring: Feelings give you reason to fight. They destroy you and build you up again. They can kill you and then give you life.”

Calum’s family life fell apart when his dad left years ago. Ever since then, his mum broke into pieces and can barely look at him – so Calum has to try and deal with the burning emotion inside him alone. All across the country, people are going missing, being murdered and words are being written across their walls in their own blood. The News crews are calling this person the Bloodletter – and the Bloodletter is getting dangerously close to Calum’s quiet town. One day a mysterious girl named Kate Black enrols at his school and everything changes.

Suddenly a dangerous world of dream demons and blood witches unfurls before Calum. He learns that the stars hold his destiny, and that the constellations that he sits and watches at night are much more than he ever knew. Calum and Kate find themselves caught right in the middle of a paranormal war where they find out they’re more than just basic players in the game. They realize that an ancient prophecy might hold the answers they seek. For Calum and Kate, even love and the fiery power of stars may not be enough to break a curse as dark as the blood that binds their destiny.

I wanted to like Light of the Moon, I really did. This book was a frustration in itself for me and personally, it wasn’t my cup of tea. It was not because the novel wasn’t well written, it was written beautifully. However, there were too many things that irritated me and the storyline was a bit confusing and hard to follow a lot of the time. It took me quite a while to finish reading Light of the Moon, mainly because I kept getting frustrated at the book and putting it down after a few pages – but I was determined to finish it.

I want to start off with talking about Calum’s character, although it’s hard to know where to start. I really didn’t like Calum at all; I didn’t think he was actually a very strong male protagonist. To be perfectly honest, I thought he acted and spoke a bit like a girl at times – which isn’t bad – but when you’re trying to create a strong male lead with a destiny to fulfil, I think the character needs to be more headstrong. He just didn’t seem to fit the character profile I had in my mind before reading this book. I’m not saying all male characters should be like this, and Calum did have his good points; he was sweet, kind and cared a lot about his friends. These characteristics are a must for me, and even though I didn’t really like Calum, he definitely fulfilled them.

As for Kate’s character; I didn’t mind her – although she’s definitely not winning my ‘favourite character of the year’ award. Kate is definitely determined, smart, and generally a strong-willed person. I didn’t think she had a whole lot of personality other than that really, and the only times she showed some genuine characteristics were when she was acting snappy and blunt. However, you can also tell how much she cares for her younger sisters and wants them back. It was pretty incredible to see the lengths she would go through to get them back to her safe and sound. Kate was definitely a dark character with an intense past and it was interesting to find out more and more about her damaged past throughout the book.

Light of the Moon is written in the two perspectives of Calum and Kate, swopping between the two every time a chapter ended. I love multiple perspectives in books, because it’s always amazing to read what the other character is thinking and feeling – rather than trying to guess. There were some pretty amazing quotes throughout this book, it’s a shame I can’t list them all. This may not be that interesting to some people, but I do love reading quotes that make me shiver and feel the emotion put into the words.

I didn’t completely hate this book; it had its up points at times and it made me feel connected to the characters on a few rare occasions. Would I recommend this book to other people? Possibly – It’ll depend on the people’s preferences – it’s quite a heavy read in my opinion. However, over all I believe the 3/5 star rating I gave it fits it perfectly – although I am quite disappointed I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would. I did love David’s writing, even if I didn’t particularly like the story – in the future I’ll definitely want to read more from him.

Quotes

The truth was that I could see the good things in my life, but they were all singed with dark, burnt edges that would never fade. All the good seemed to burn away before I had a chance to keep it. Good and gone.
Fall.
I closed my eyes-
Fall there.
Opened them, and pretended the leaves were stars.
Fall.
And then it did.
A heart-shaped leaf of brilliant red, brighter than all the rest, dropped from the sky like a star through the night, and landed in the exact spot my eyes watched. It was violently red, like blood on the green grass, except for edges that were turned up, brown and curled and dying. - Page 71, 19%.

Beyond the Doors of Judgment was cold darkness, and the icy air of reality made me realize one thing: No matter what, I was a Warrior to the bone. My blood was hot with angry strength. My soul filled with courage. I would not be weak in front of the Elders. I threw Calum’s hand off mine. I couldn’t let myself be close to him, not now. The Order thought strength and courage could not be found in love. - Page 249, 66%.

I shook my head. “This person you are right now, this is who a Warrior should be. Not that girl you were before, the one that was cold as ice and afraid to show me anything. You, Kate, crying right now for someone you just lost? Someone you loved? You look like you could take on the world. Don’t you see that tears, feelings, make you stronger? Loving and losing and hating and caring: Feelings give you reason to fight. They destroy you and build you up again. They can kill you and then give you life. That’s not weakness, Kate. It’s strength.” - Page 276, 73%.

Waiting On Wednesday: Imposter by Jill Hathaway

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Hey Book Nerds! ^.^ How are you all doing today? I'm still in such a reading slump and I'm slowly plodding my way through Light of the Moon. I've not read any more than a few pages of When It Happens by Susane Colasanti, just because I want to finish reading and review Light of the Moon ASAP. It's not the books fault really, I've just been really distracted lately and not in a very big reading mood. Hopefully I'll come out of it soon! :D I hope you’re all having a great week so far. :)

Impostor

Title: Imposter.
Series: Slide, #2.
Author: Jill Hathaway.
Expected Publication: April 26th, 2013.
Publisher: Harper Collins.
Genres: Mystery, Thriller, Young Adult.

Be afraid of your shadow...

Vee Bell has witnessed murder. She nearly died trying to track down the killer, all because of her secret condition. She'd tell her best friend Rollins but lately he seems more interested in his colleague Anna than her. Maybe she should confide in her long-lost aunt who's turned up out of the blue?

All of a sudden life is happening in reverse: Vee is waking up in weird places not knowing what she's done. The only thing she's sure of is that someone is messing with her. And when a prank goes horribly wrong, this time the hands with blood on them might be hers.

Thoughts

This is the second book in the Slide series. I read Slide the other month and I LOVED it! :D You can read my review here. I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on this sequel, it looks fantastic. :) I believe that it's being released at the end of this month in America; however we Brits have to wait until April - which isn’t particularly fair - but oh well! :P As for the cover, I kind of like it, however it really doesn’t match my UK Slide one. ;_; The US cover is much prettier and I may try and get my hands on that instead, but if not, I’ll just hide it. xD

What are you "Waiting On" this Wednesday? Leave me a comment or a link to your blog post and I'll be sure to check it out! :D Happy Reading. (:

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly book meme hosted by MizB from Should Be Reading. Grab your current read, open to a random page and share two “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page - remember, no spoilers!

Hey Book Nerds! :3 I seriously messed up my dates for the Blog Tour I'm hosting that I've been mentioning the last few days. I thought it was supposed to be scheduled for 11th March, but apparently it's 11th May! ;_; I'm so silly! I rushed reading the book and wrote my review at the weekend. ^^; Oh dear... Silly Tiffa! Any who, I'm still reading Light of the Moon, and unfortunately, I'm not really enjoying it at all - it's not my cup of tea. However, I also HAVE just started another psychical book. :)

Teaser

When It Happens
Title: When It Happens.

The prospect of starting senior year next week without a real boyfriend is the worst. Not some math dork or physics geek I end up liking just because he's there. I mean a boyfriend who's everything I want. The whole package.

I'm not that far into this book at all, only a few pages, so I don't actually have a real opinion at the moment. However, I'm really sure I'm going to like it. :) The cover is quite cool, too. It's cleverly done. ^.^ Have you read When It Happens? Let me know! :D
