Review

Better Than Perfect was an interesting book, but I’m in two minds on how I really feel about it. On one hand Simone Elkeles’ writing is funny and interesting and wonderfully scripted, and on the other I really wasn’t sure how I felt about the romance and I definitely didn’t like one of the characters. I also didn’t realise that there would be so much football talk/football related content involved – or any at all for that matter. Too much sport mentioned in novels is a big turn off for me, as I’m really not a fan of it, so it usually just soars clean over my head and starts to irritate me. I usually tend to avoid these types of books because of this, but oh well! Better Than Perfect is told in the dual perspective of our male and female main characters, which I always love as you get to see both sides of the story and get to know both characters on different levels.

Better Than Perfect

Derek is our main male protagonist in Better Than Perfect and I loved his character! He’s cocky, funny and sarcastic and doesn’t pretend to be anything but himself even when he’s being an ass. Even though his character is supposed to be a bad boy, I didn’t see him that way at all. Derek is a sweetie, he may be a bit hot headed, but he cares a lot and isn’t afraid to show it at times - through actions or words. The only thing about Derek that irritated me was his constant use of the phrase ‘Sweetie Pie, It drove me absolutely nuts! It was so degrading and cringe-worthy, and irked the hell out of me. Other than that small issue though, I really did love his character.

Ashtyn is our female protagonist in the novel, and to be perfectly honest, I didn’t like her one bit! Ashtyn is a tomboy who loves to play football, but also has a girly and sexy side to her; the fact that her personality was so different from everyone else was her only redeeming quality. But she was also bitchy, immature, selfish, cruel, rude, needy and clingy – everything she claimed she’d never be! Ashtyn ran so hot and cold throughout Better Than Perfect, one minute she’s saying how much she hates Derek, and in the same paragraph she’s daydreaming about kissing him. Make up your mind, girl! I hated how she thought she could change Derek, and how, even though he’s been nothing but honest with her, she acts like the news of him being a player is a shock.

Overall I enjoyed Better Than Perfect, but it was far from an amazing and flawless book. I wasn’t fond of the romance that occurred and the relationship Derek and Ashtyn had. There just wasn’t any chemistry between them and there was way too much fighting and bickering between the two of them to make it enjoyable. If Simone’s writing wasn’t as great as it was, and if I didn’t like Derek’s character as much as I did, I’m pretty sure I would have put down Better Than Perfect rather than finishing it. It’s hard to say who I’d recommend this book too, but I do know that I will be reading more from Simone Elkeles in the future, as I love her writing style and character development. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more from her; it’s just a shame that I wasn’t that keen on this particular book.

Quotes

"I told you it wasn't her," Vic says. "She doesn't have the balls to do it."
That is so insulting. "I have balls, Vic!"
"I knew it!" Jet wags his eyebrows and reaches for my waistband. "Let me see 'em, Ash."
I roll my eyes and slap his arm away. - Page 77.

"I told you not to play, but no! Your ego got in the way of your brain and those shaved balls of yours."
"I didn't say I shaved them. I trim."
She looks at me as if I'm nuts. "Same difference." - Page 99.

I know this dream won't last forever and a part of me will always want him as a permanent fixture in my life.
"You own a piece of me," He murmurs as he holds me afterwards.
"Good," I tell him. "And just so you know...I'm never giving it back." - Page 316.

May 2015 Wrap-Up

Hey book nerds! ^.^ Sorry this post is a little late, but better late than never! ;) I know I haven't posted a wrap-up video or post in MONTHS, but I've decided to just start from scratch from what I read in May and forgo the books I've read since my last wrap-up. This is mostly because I can't be bothered to list them, even though there were only a few! Let me know if you'd like to know what I read between posts, and I'll comment you to tell you. ^.^ I've been trying my best to get back into my reading, as I had a long, long break - so I'm starting off slowly and trying not to push myself too much. So far it seems to be going well. :) I hope you're all doing well and you're having a lovely June so far, and I'll post again as soon as I can. ^.^

When Paige Townsen gets picked to star in the movie adaptation of a blockbuster book series, her life changes practically overnight. Within a month she's thrown into a world of gossip, rumour and deceit. The only people who know what she's going through are her two male costars, but her feelings for them are getting complicated. Paige knows it's a mistake to fall in love on the set of a movie, but days of on-screen romance start to change her mind. The question is, can she keep what happens behind the scenes a secret when the world is watching her every move?

Review

I wasn't sure what to make of Famous In Love when I first started reading it, I thought there were only two directions this type of book could go in. It could either be a brilliantly done novel that I absolutely adored, or a book that I threw across the room in a tantrum from my dislike of the book. I'm actually incredibly proud to say that, although I was a little frustrated at times by Famous In Love, I also really enjoyed reading it. I wouldn't say that it was the most incredible book I have ever read, but It was pretty darn awesome!

Famous In Love Banner

Paige is our main protagonist in Famous In Love, and I have to admit I wasn't overly keen on her character at first. At first she really irritated me, and If it wasn't for the fact that the storyline was really interesting, I would have put the book down then and there. However, I am so glad I didn't, because Paige ended up turning into a brilliant and funny character, with lots of charm and depth to her that she didn't have at the beginning of the book.

I was also a little worried about the obvious love-triangle that was implied before I even started reading Famous In Love. I'm not usually fond of love-triangles at all, but I actually found myself really intrigued by this one! The way Paige feels about both the love interests in Famous In Love, is completely different. They both make her feel completely different things than the other, which is what made me like it so much! I was honestly a little anxious to find out who she'd choose over the two boys, as their relationships are so stark and different. I honestly didn't have a clue as to what would happen next in Paige's relationships - I just had to keep guessing and most of the time I was wrong! Rainer and Jordan, the love interests, were both brilliant and beautifully developed characters that are just really swoon-worthy! It wasn't until the end of the book that I finally decided on who I wanted to root for, my opinion kept changing with every passing chapter.

Overall, I thought Famous In Love was a fantastic book, and I definitely enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I was going to! The different relationships throughout this book are what really kept me interested in Famous In Love, as they just kept on developing and growing until the very end. Rebecca Serle's writing is witty, sweet and interesting and she creates characters that you just can't help but love. I believe Famous In Love really deserves the 4/5 star rating, and I honestly can't wait to find out what happens next in this series as I'm sure it's going to be brilliant!

Quotes

He has this look on his face like he wants to say something. I hold my breath. But he doesn't talk. He doesn't say anything. He kisses me.
My chest tightens and then swells as his lips come down on mine. My hands travel up his arms to grip his shoulders. He presses me to him so there is no space between us. He's kissing me with so much intention. It's gentle and soft and strong and sweet all at once. It's everything I have ever wanted. I can feel us getting soaked, feel the rain on our faces, but I don't care. - Page 166.

That's the thing about success. it changes a lot, but not everything. You still have bad hair days. Friendships that have fallen apart won't miraculously be fixed. And the people who didn't love you before still won't. Because the one thing success never changes, no matter what level you reach, is what has already happened. - Page 251.

That's life. It just happens, and with it a lot of stuff you can't take back. But the wonderful part is that often, the things that challenge you, that require you to use your whole self, are exactly those that are really worth it. - Page 291.

And see, that's the thing I didn't understand. The thing no one tells you. That just because you find love doesn't mean it's your to keep. Love never belongs to you. It belongs to the universe. To the same wind that blows the surfers across the waves and the current that carries you back to shore. You can't hold on to it because it's bigger than anything you could possibly grasp with your own bare hands. It's bigger than me or Rainer or Jordan. It's bigger than everything. - Page 308.

Publication Date: April 2nd, 2015.
Publisher: Chicken House.
Genres: Dystopia, Sci-Fi, Young Adult.

My Rating:

One hundred and twenty-two began. Only sixty-four remain.

Tella's made it through the first terrains of the Brimstone Bleed - but the contest isn't over yet. If she wants to save her brother, she must face the fierce ocean and the icy mountains, all for the chance of winning the Cure.

And even if Tella surives these deadly places, the greatest threat will still be her fellow Contenders - even the ones she trusts the most...

Review

I've lost count the amount of times I cried and swore whilst reading Salt & Stone. Seriously, I'm pretty sure my family thought I was going crazy as they listened to me laugh, cry and swear like a sailor whilst reading this wonderful and beautiful book. When it comes to sequels and second books in series, I feel they can be a bit of a hit or miss. Usually they're never as good as the first book, even if they're really brilliant. However, Salt & Stone was just as incredible as Fire & Flood that I really don't know where to begin - if you thought Fire & Flood was fast-paced and action-packed, then you'll be blown away by Salt & Stone!

Salt & Stone Banner

Tella, our main character in Salt & Stone, is back and more bad ass than ever with the help of her Pandora friends and wicked personality. I thought that Tella really progressed and improved as a character in this instalment, relying less on her Contender friends, and more on herself. But she still managed to keep all of her quirky traits and humour, I just loved her! The romance between Tella and Guy, her fellow contender and love interest, was even more swoon-worthy in this book than the last, although I didn't think that was even possible! Guy is his usual withdrawn and closed off self, like in Fire & Flood, but he's also starting to become unravelled and his true emotions are seeping through, which just made his character even more loveable. I believe I've said this before, but I'd love my own Guy - Victoria Scott, would you write one just for me, pretty please?

One of the things I loved most about Salt & Stone was how raw and brutal the romance and relationships in this book were. All the characters emotions were heightened from the stress of completing the first half of the Brimstone Bleed, and it was really incredible to read about. Especially seeing how far some of the characters would go for the people they loved, and whether they'd lose themselves and their humanity in the process. We're introduced to lots of new characters in Salt & Stone, and all of them, whether their loveable or not, have their own unique and interesting personalities. This is one of the reasons why I love Victoria's writing style so much, she's able to create characters that are memorable, and totally unforgettable.

Overall, I thought Salt & Stone was an incredible, unique and brilliant book that I just couldn't put down. I just kept telling myself one more chapter, and 5 chapters later I still hadn't managed to stop reading it! Victoria Scott has created the most incredible and unique world, storyline and characters that is just fantastic and one that stays with you even after you'd turned the last page. If you haven't already read the first book in this series, Fire & Flood, then I urge you to pick it up as soon as possible! Salt & Stone well and truly deserves the 5/5 star rating I've given it, and I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the next book in this series - it's such a shame that we have to wait so long for it, there isn't even a release date!

Quotes

One of the grizzlies had the iguana in his mouth. The lizard lets this happen without struggle, like she's already lost all sense of dignity, so why not ride in bear's jaws into the ocean? - Page 57.

'You say all the wrong things. You're completely untrained and ill prepared when it comes to surviving this race. You care too much for the Contenders and Pandora's when you should focus only on your brother's welfare.' He swallows and shakes his head, hesitating. 'I may have saved you in the jungle, Tella, and in the desert, too. But out there in the ocean, you saved me.' - Page 193.

I spin on my heel and storm away, but before I can get too far, Guy overtakes me. His hands are suddenly everywhere: in my hair, clutching my back, stroking the planes of my lips. I fall into him, allowing his touch to overtake my senses. His lips graze my collarbone and work their way up, moving with fervour. My head falls back, allowing him full access to my throat. Each hurried, passionate kiss along my neck is like flames licking my skin. He lifts me up, draws my body closer. My hands slid into his hair, and I grip those dark locks between my fingers.
His mouth moves from my neck and hovers an inch from my lips. - Page 199.

I walk slowly on hands and knees towards the mound of snow. Cotton seems to understand what I'm doing and follows along.
We move like feral cats trailing a finch. Slow now. Not too quick. Not even a tail flick, lest we lose our prize. The ceiling wails and whimpers as a child would during a temper tantrum. Every step take I believe is my last and that this is the position some future robot will find me in. 'Human expired while walking like a dog. Bleep, blurp, bleep. Shall I gather the bones? Bleep.' - Page 316 & 317.

Review: The Rain by Virginia Bergin

The Rain
Title: The Rain.
Series: The Rain, #1.
Author: Virginia Bergin.
Publication Date: July 17th, 2014.
Publisher: Macmillan.
Genres: Post-Apocalyptic, Young Adult.
Format: Paperback, 384 pages.

My Rating:
It's in the rain...and just one drop will kill you.

They don't believe it at first. Crowded in Zach's kitchen, Ruby and the rest of the partygoers laugh at Zach's parents' frenzied push to get them all inside as it starts to drizzle. But then the radio comes on with the warning, "It's in the rain! It's fatal, it's contagious, and there's no cure."

Two weeks later, Ruby is alone. Anyone who's been touched by rain or washed their hands with tap water is dead. The only drinkable water is quickly running out. Ruby's only chance for survival is a treacherous hike across the country to find her father-if he's even still alive.

Review

It feels like I haven’t written a review in about a year, although it has only been a couple of months. So, I apologise if I seem a little rusty! The Rain is set in a diary format and it is as if the main character is speaking directly to you, I absolutely loved this, as I don’t come across books like it very often! The Rain is a brilliant and pretty darn awesome post-apocalyptic novel with a really fantastic premise and interesting characters. Every time I go to get a glass of water now, I pause for a second and need to remind myself that it hadn’t happened in real life – not yet at least!

The Rain

Ruby is our main protagonist and I actually started off liking her quite a lot, she seemed like a very typical teenage girl and was generally a pretty bubbly and interesting character. However, the more I read The Rain, the more I grew to dislike her. Ruby turned out to be an irritating, annoying, frustrating, big-headed, over dramatic, rude and mean character. The way she treated people, her family included, made me want to whack her over the head with the book. I know she’s only seventeen, but you would think, given the circumstances (and the fact that she’s nearly an adult) she’d mature a little, but she just got worse as the book went on. I don’t know whether this was Virginia Bergin’s plan all along, but Ruby was definitely not a character I would want to know!

Overall, The Rain was a really good book that I found really difficult to put down; I needed to find out what would happen next! Virginia Bergin’s writing is different and unique and I have to say I’ve definitely not read anything like it before. I loved the format the book was in, a diary written by Ruby and although I didn’t like Ruby’s character, it didn’t detract from the brilliance of the book. Virginia Bergin is a fantastic author and I can’t wait to read more from her in the future, I would also definitely recommend The Rain to any post-apocalyptic fan as it really is a unique read!

Quotes

Simon’s hands snatched round my middle and pulled me back. He pinned me to him.
My scream died in the air; it died and joined all the other screams. They live like ghosts, like echoes in the minds of the living. My scream burst out and died and lungs refused - refused - to suck air in. I wanted to stop, to die with that scream.
‘Breathe, breathe, breathe,’ Simon kept saying. He was crying. He would not let me go.
Then it comes. Your lungs suck in air; your body decides for you. You will live.
You’re one breath away from her, then two, then three, then four, then five.
Mum, I am still breathing. - Page 72 & 73.

Whitby, outside, had started to whimper...and the sound of his crying, it was awful and I could feel I was about ready to totally yee-haa...and then...something kicked in, just for a second, about how..I dunno. How it’s so hard now to work things out it’s maybe easier to work them out with other people, but how being with other people is dangerous as well as safer...because you have to agree all the time...because if you don’t sort it out and you don’t agree, a lot of things can go wrong.
Basically people can die. [...]

My eyes were so tear-blurry I could hardly even see Whitby running after the car, barking. Please don’t leave me, please don’t leave me, please don’t leave me.
I could hardly even see him until he was just a tiny dot, sitting in the middle of the motorway, howling. - Page 304.

I had these thoughts – strange, but not scary – about how maybe there’d be so few people left now that the animals would set up a human zoo and bring their animal children to stare at us and tell them in Animalese to shush and not frighten us, and give us mobile phones to play with and feed us on tinned stuff and bottles of cola. Yikes! And try to get us to breed! Imagine spending the rest of your life trapped in a cage with Darius Spratt, being forced to try to like each other. – Page 343.

August 2014 Book Haul

Hey fellow book lovers. :D I Am SO sorry for my huge absence over the last month or so - at first things were going badly, and then all of a sudden hundreds of things started happening at once. I've been seeing friends, and I've just started two courses so I can go back and take my Maths and English GCSE's as I never managed to take them at school. So everything is really hectic and I've had a lot of work to do and there's really been no free second for me to do anything really at all! I am however, still working on my new blog, I've nearly finished editing everything and I hope to have everything public very soon, but I can't promise you when. On top of all that, I've barely read ANYTHING over the last two months, which is really irritating - but hopefully eventually I'll start up again. I think I've just been in a huge reading slump. Anyways, that's it for today, I'll try and update again very soon - but until then, take care guys!
