He bent down, savouring the work ahead, and he unzipped the bag at this feet. The unmistakable metallic scent of blood lingered with the wispy trace of barely decaying flesh. He inhaled it all deeply. In a moment it would be over, and he would never smell this particular girl again.

E-Book Haul #3

Hey book nerds! :D How are you all doing today? :) Are you glad it's the weekend? :P I am! It's my Granddad’s birthday tomorrow, so all my family are heading to my grandparents place to see them, wish them a Happy Birthday and to have some cake. :) Then, on the 15th, the day after, it's my birthday. (As I've said MANY times in the last week.) When I was younger we used to get together and celebrate our birthdays on both our birthdays, but because they're one after the other, we usually only get together on my Granddad’s to have cake. Anyway, I was thinking; on Monday the 15th April that I hold a giveaway on my blog! :D Would any of you guys be interested in winning my spare copy of The Immortal Rules by Julia Kagawa? Unfortunately It'll probably be UK and Ireland only. Let me know if you'd be interested! :)

Friday Finds #27

Friday finds is a meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading which showcases the books you've recently ‘found’ and added to your To Be Read (TBR) list.

Hey Book Nerds! :D I hope you're all doing well. Can you believe it's nearly the weekend again already?! o_O This week has gone really fast for me for some weird reason. :P I'm not complaining, but it is strange. :) My friend Sarah came over again yesterday for an hour or two to celebrate my birthday early. As I've said before, she goes back to University the day before my actual birthday, so we celebrated yesterday! :D We had coffee and cake at my village's café and took a lot of pictures. ^.^ It was a lot of fun! There's not a whole lot else to say, apart from; I started reading The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting last night! I'm not that far into it yet, but it's fantastic so far, and I'm sure I'm going to love it! I love a good Murder Mystery. :3 I hope you all have a great day. ^.^

Friday Finds

Shattered Souls (Souls, #1) by Mary Lindsey.
Lenzi hears voices and has visions - gravestones, floods, a boy with steel gray eyes. Her boyfriend, Zak, can't help, and everything keeps getting louder and more intense. Then Lenzi meets Alden, the boy from her dreams, who reveals that she's a reincarnated Speaker - someone who can talk to and help lost souls - and that he has been her Protector for centuries. Now Lenzi must choose between her life with Zak and the life she is destined to lead with Alden. But time is running out: a malevolent spirit is out to destroy Lenzi, and he will kill her if she doesn't make a decision soon.

Croak (Croak, #1) by Gina Damico.
Fed up with her wild behavior, sixteen-year-old Lex's parents ship her off to upstate New York to live with her Uncle Mort for the summer, hoping that a few months of dirty farm work will whip her back into shape. But Uncle Mort's true occupation is much dirtier than shoveling manure. He's a Grim Reaper. And he's going to teach Lex the family business.

She quickly assimilates into the peculiar world of Croak, a town populated by reapers who deliver souls from this life to the next. But Lex can't stop her desire for justice - or is it vengeance? - whenever she encounters a murder victim, craving to stop the attackers before they can strike again. Will she ditch Croak and go rogue with her reaper skills?

Between by Jessica Warman.
Elizabeth Valchar-pretty, popular, and perfect-wakes up the morning after her eighteenth birthday party on her family's yacht, where she'd been celebrating with her six closest friends. A persistent thumping noise has roused her. When she goes to investigate, what she finds will change everything she thought she knew about her life, her friends, and everything in between. As Liz begins to unravel the circumstances surrounding her birthday night, she will find that no one around her, least of all Liz herself, was perfect-or innocent. Critically acclaimed author Jessica Warman brings readers along on a roller-coaster ride of a mystery, one that is also a heartbreaking character study, a touching romance, and ultimately a hopeful tale of redemption, love, and letting go.

I Know It's Over by C.K. Kelly Martin.
Pure. Unplanned. Perfect. Those were Nick’s summer plans before Sasha stepped into the picture. With the collateral damage from his parents’ divorce still settling and Dani (his girl of the moment) up for nearly anything, complications are the last thing he needs. All that changes, though, when Nick runs into Sasha at the beach in July. Suddenly he’s neck-deep in a relationship and surprised to find he doesn’t mind in the least. But Nick’s world shifts again when Sasha breaks up with him. Then weeks later, while Nick’s still reeling from the breakup, she turns up at his doorstep and tells him she’s pregnant, and Nick finds himself struggling once more to understand the girl he can’t stop caring for, the girl who insists that it’s still over.

Review

Sixteen years after a deadly plague wiped out about 98% of the world’s population, the world is a deadly and terrifying place. Orphaned children are taken to schools, where the women are groomed and taught skills and grace. Eighteen year old Eve is the schools prize, smart, beautiful and the valedictorian. However, the night before her graduation, Eve learns the truth, from a girl named Arden, about her schools real purpose and the horrific future that’s in store for her, enforced by the King.

Arden escapes the school that night, leaving Eve doubting everything that she’s ever known. Later that night, Eve finds proof of Arden’s accusations and manages to escape the school the same night. She sets out into the wilderness, eventually stumbling along Arden and together they head towards a safe camp called Califia. On their way they are rescued from a tricky situation - involving King’s guard - by a tall and handsome boy named Caleb.

This was such a fantastic book that I’m finding it hard where to start. There were so many different twists and turns through this book that it kept me constantly on edge. I felt like I couldn’t put this novel down until I had turned the very last page. I loved how Eve didn’t take long to get going and practically jumped straight into the action. There weren’t 70 or so pages of annoying chapters beforehand that don’t really matter, like in most books I’ve read.

The main character, Eve, was fantastic. She’s strong-willed, smart, kind and caring with a lovely personality that you just can’t help but love. Eve starts off as this innocent teenage girl, brought up to believe everything that she was told, believing she’ll have a happily ever after. It was amazing to watch her character grow from an adolescent to an adult. From having no responsibilities to having to take responsibility for all the mistakes she makes.

Caleb has quickly become one of my favourite male book characters. Caleb is sweet, funny, caring, self-sacrificing and overall just an amazing character. I honestly wonder how many people would risk their life to save a complete and utter stranger. My answer is not many; so I’ve always had a soft spot for people or characters that actually do so.

I loved watched the relationship between Eve and Caleb blossom. Eve has been taught all her life that men are evil, ruthless creatures that can’t be trusted – but she soon discovers this isn’t true for all of them. Eve soon begins to trust Caleb and savour the time they spend together, eventually realising she’s fallen in love with him. Finally she figures out that he’ll never be safe, as long as she’s with him. I found it all a little heartbreaking and embarrassingly found myself crying a little as I read some of the scenes between them.

I loved all of the characters, they were amazing. I also loved reading about their pasts and what they plan to do in the future. The world building throughout the novel was also fantastic. It’s been 16 years since the pandemic, and pretty much everything out in the world has been abandoned, apart from the City of Sand where the King lives. As Eve passed through towns and forests, I felt like I could really imagine what it would be like; the disruption, the decay, abandonment and emptiness. The entire writing style just completely drew me in, and I knew, even before I’d finished reading it, that It was going to get a high rating.

Overall, I was so impressed with this book and it’s quickly become one of my favourites. The ending of the novel had me frowning and frantically trying to figure out whether there were any more pages left. At first, I wished it hadn’t ended like it did, but as I look back – I believe it was the perfect end to the first book in this trilogy. Eve deserves nothing less than a 5/5 star rating in my opinion and I can’t wait to get my hands on the sequel, ‘Once’, to carry on this incredible series.

Quotes

While he emptied the contents of the box onto the floor, sorting through tin cans and silver pouches, I studied his face. The river had washed away most of the dirt from his skin and it was now shiny and smooth, a few freckles covering the flat bridge of his nose. My eyes kept returning to his strong, angular features, the bones pressing against his skin. I knew I should be more afraid of him, but right now, I was simply fascinated. What was that word again, the one Teacher had used to describe her husband? The one Pip and I had joked about at school? Caleb, even with his brown nails and tangled hair, seemed almost...handsome. - Page 81.

"You can love anyone," I interrupted, looking around at the group. "Love is just" - I searched for the right words - "caring about someone very deeply. Feeling like that person matters to you, like your whole world would be sadder without them in it." - Page 133.

"But maybe the old bag was right. There is some kind of insanity in his eyes. It's like he wants to devour your soul or something." - Page 175.

*Squeals like a little girl* This book looks SO amazing! The synopsis doesn't give a whole lot of information away, which makes it look even more amazing. The cover is also incredible - everything about this book is just WOW! :D I can't believe we have to wait until October for its release though, that really sucks. D: I was searching through my Good Reads, and I released that loads of my friends/people I follow on there have added it to their TBR lists - so it seems it's really popular! Hopefully it'll live up the expectations. ^.^ What do you guys think of the looks of this book, have you heard of it before? :) Let me know! ^.^

Genres: Sci-Fi, Post-Apocalyptic, Young Adult.
The last day I would have chosen - the last day I deserved - would have involved more chocolate. Significantly more. Dark. Milk. White. Bittersweet. Olive infused. Caramel filled. Truffle. Ganache. There would have been cheese, too, the soft, runny kind that stinks up a room as it dribbles down your throat. I would have lay in bed all day, eating the food I can no longer eat, listening to the music I no longer care to hear, feeling.

I'm sure it’s going to be a great read and I can't wait to continue it. :) Have you read Skinned before? Let me know! ^.^

Review

I received an eBook copy of this book for a blog tour, in exchange for an honest review.

Layla is living successfully and happily in New York when she receives a rather anxious and demanding phone call from the psychic Grandmother that raised her. Layla’s Grandma demands that she must return to her home town straight away, and then hangs up without giving a reason. When Layla arrives, she finds her Grandmother has been stockpiling supplies, getting rid of unnecessary objects and sends Layla out on errands to gather even more necessities – all, again, without telling her what’s going on. Her Grandma teachers her how to load and shoot the firearms she’s stocked up on, and puts her into an induced sleep. Once Layla awakens, she finds the Zombie Apocalypse has spread to her town, turning many of the people into flesh eating Zombies, her Grandma is missing and she now has psychic abilities. However, Layla has to push all that aside as she tries her best to protect the town and the people in it; who have all of a sudden turned to her for guidance.

The Harvesting was a great New Adult/Adult post apocalyptic and fantasy novel all squished into one. I liked this book, I really did; it contained humour and just enough romance to satisfy my girlish need. However there were quite a few things that just irritated me, didn’t seem to fit or I found brought the rating of the book down in general.

Layla, our main character, is the kick-ass heroine who appears in town and helps save the day - pretty predictable, right? Although I liked Layla’s character overall, I didn’t feel that she was very well developed at all. Layla is a fencing/martial arts sword instructor and curator. As the book progressed, I kept hoping that we’d find out more about Layla’s character, past and personality but I was disappointed. She has bad history in the town, leaving after a messy breakup with her high school sweetheart four years ago and hasn’t returned since. The only characteristics I managed to pick up from Layla is that she’s strong-willed, a great sword wielder and a natural born leader.

Throughout the entire novel, we meet quite a few new people from the small town. Although they’re pretty much glossed over and not well described; it was fun to read about them as they blended into the story. Two people we meet in particular are Ian and Jamie, who are brothers from the town. Ian is Layla’s high school sweetheart and ex-boyfriend. I hated Ian from the start, not just because of the things he did to Layla in the past, but because his character was a complete and utter jerk. Jamie is a sweet and kind guy, who’s just come back to the town from being in Iraq as a medic. I loved Jamie from the start, he was such an easy going guy that you could tell that Layla could fully relax and be herself around him.

Although I was disappointed not to know more about the characters personalities, it didn’t stop me from wanting to continue reading this novel. I did find that the novel was constantly jumping from scene to scene; often jumping a month or so into the future with no pre-warning – which was really annoying and hard to keep up with. I also wished there was a lot more detailing than there was, it felt like the author was just gliding over the details and important information. Whether this was intentional or not, I found it slightly frustrating.

The story had so many different aspects to it, which I loved. There was plenty of Folklore, fairies, magic, weapons and battles to keep any fantasy and post-apocalyptic enthusiasts entertained for a while. At first, I wasn’t sure how I felt about all these different aspects, seeing as I at first I thought it was just a Zombie novel, but the more I read the more interesting and appealing it was. Along with being a post-apocalyptic novel, we meet another super-natural being – which I thought was totally out of place at first – but looking back, I realised it helped make the novel what it was.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book; it had so many different twists and turns that I never knew what would happen next. Unfortunately, I did only rate it 3/5 stars because of the aspects mentioned above. Melanie Karsak’s writing was completely different from what I’ve read before and I’ll be sure to check out the sequel to this book, The Shadow Aspect, when it’s released!
