Thoughts

My gosh, I am SO excited for the release of this book - I can't even begin to explain how much I want to read it! I've read James Dawson's other novel, Hollow Pike and I absolutely adored everything about it - it's one of my favourite books. James’s writing is amazing and I can't wait to read more from him! I'm not that keen on the cover for this book; it's really boring compared to his other book cover, but oh well. :) (I do like the font though) I can't believe it comes out tomorrow! It's such a shame I can't order it yet as I don't have the money to pay full price for it at the moment. Hopefully soon I will though! What do you guys think of the looks of this book, have you heard of it before? :) Let me know! ^.^

What are you "Waiting On" this Wednesday? Leave me a comment or a link to your blog post and I'll be sure to check it out! :D Happy Reading. (:

Stacking The Shelves #35

Stacking The Shelves is hosted by Tyngas Reviews and is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. Including books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!

Hey book nerds! :) I'm absolutely shattered from yesterday, we spend all day painting our hallway, and you wouldn't believe how sticky and horrible gloss is to work with! Anyway, I'm still reading Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder, I'm over half way done with it and I'm LOVING it! It's such a great book. :) I can't wait to finish it and see what happens. ^.^ Keep an eye out over the next week or so for my review of it. :) Lastly, I'm meeting with a publisher from Chicken House Publishing on Wednesday, (I can't wait!) and she's going to be showing me around the office and then we're going for a coffee and an informal interview. SO GUYS, I REALLY need help with some questions to ask her, I've only come up with three so far. ;_; You'll be credited on my post for the question of course, but I'd love to have some of your questions about publishing answered. Let me know! I hope you've all had a great week and I'll talk again soon! :D

I can hardly contain my excitement for all of these books! :D I really wish I could just read them all now and forget my TBR pile.. ;_; DARN IT! xD I think one of the ones I'm most excited for though is Legend by Marie Lu. I've heard some amazing things about it, and I can't wait to start it! :D My favourite cover is probably my edition of Daughter of Smoke and Bone - it's GORGEOUS! Are you jealous? :P As for the e-Books, you know the drill! They were all freebies on Amazon at the time I purchased them; some of them may still be - go check them out. Lazy! :3 My favourite e-Book covers are Collide and Broken Promises - they're stunning and I love them so much. :) Have you read any of these books? Let me know! ^.^

Friday Finds #33

Friday finds is a meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading which showcases the books you've recently ‘found’ and added to your To Be Read (TBR) list.

Hey Book Nerds! :D How are you all doing today? I've been so tired this week and I've just sleeping lots, so I'm sorry for the lack of updates! I've not posted a Friday Finds post in AGES so I thought today would be a good day so show you a few of the books I've added to my TBR list recently. :) Anyway, I finished reading Vampire Academy the other day and I LOVED IT! It's such a fantastic book; I really can't wait to read more of the series. :3 However, now I'm currently reading Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder and I'm enjoying it as well. ^.^ I'm not that far into it, but oh well. That's it for today; I hope you're all looking forward to your weekend. :)

Friday Finds

Love Is A Number by Lee Monroe.
When her beloved boyfriend Huck dies, Eloise is wrecked. All she has left of him are the texts that he sent: short, succinct - but full of love. They keep Huck alive. And so Eloise texts him back as if he can receive her messages from beyond the grave. She never expected to get a reply ....

Dan is travelling South America in one last hurrah before university and real life kick in. He's ready for love, but not of the casual kind. He's not met a girl that's set his world alight. But he's ready for her when she decides to make an appearance. One night on his travels, Dan discovers an abandoned phone. He pockets it, then forgets about it. He never expected it to ring ....

Alice in Zombieland (White Rabbit Chronicles, #1) by Gena Showalter.
She won’t rest until she’s sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Forever.
Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that’s all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.

Her father was right. The monsters are real….
To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn’t careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies….

I wish I could go back and do a thousand things differently. I'd tell my sister no. I'd never beg my mother to talk to my dad. I'd zip my lips and swallow those hateful words. Or, barring all of that, I'd hug my sister, my mom and my dad one last time. I'd tell them I love them. I wish... Yeah, I wish.

Zombie Blondes by Brian James.
From the moment Hannah Sanders arrived in town, she felt there was something wrong. A lot of houses were for sale, and the town seemed infected by an unearthly quiet. And then, on Hannah’s first day of classes, she ran into a group of cheerleaders—the most popular girls in school. The odd thing was that they were nearly identical in appearance: blonde, beautiful, and deathly pale. But Hannah wants desperately to fit in—regardless of what her friend Lukas is telling her: if she doesn’t watch her back, she’s going to be blonde and popular and dead—just like all the other zombies in this town...

Immortal Beloved (Immortal Beloved, #1) by Cate Tiernan.
New name, new town, new life. Nastasya has done it too often to count. And there's no end in sight. Nothing ever really ends ...when you're immortal. But now, after centuries of feeding from the lives of the innocents around her, of living with little care for others, Nastasya is ready to turn towards the light. 'After some of the events I've witnessed I felt like I was a shell with nothing alive left in me. I hadn't been going around killing people, but people were hurt -- the memories just kept trickling in like rivulets of fresh acid dripping into my brain until I wanted to scream. It was in my blood, I knew. A darkness. The darkness. I had inherited it, along with my immortality and my black eyes.'

Thoughts

Summaries from Good Reads. I think all of these books look really good! I've heard some great things about Alice in Zombieland and I really want to pick myself up a copy. :) I've not heard much about Love Is A Number and Zombie Blondes, but I think they look like really fun and quick reads! :D As for the covers; I'm not a fan of Love Is A Number's cover, it seems a bit childish, but I love the rest. I don't really have a favourite. ^.^ Have you read any of my finds this week? Let me know! :)

Top Ten Tuesday: Words/Topics That Will Make Me Not Pick Up A Book

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish.

Hey Book Nerds! :) Sorry for the lack of updates last week. (Aside from the Book Haul) I've just been really tired the last week or so, and the heats been getting to me. I've just been sitting on my bed doing jigsaws and watching my DVD set of Pretty Little Liars. It's been quite fun actually. :P Anyway, today's Top Ten Topic is quite interesting, and I can't wait to see what turns you off from certain books. I'm surprised that I made it to ten, as there are only a few topics that I dislike reading. Now that I look back on the post, there are more that I hate than I knew. A few months back, I would have mentioned historical fiction, but I no longer hate that. Now, onto mine!

Top Ten Words/Topics That Will Make Me Not Pick Up A Book

  • 1. War.

  • I may be slowly getting into Historical Fiction, but this does not detract from the fact that I'm really not that keen on War Related books, whether they're fiction or not! I find War based books quite boring and depressing - that's not to say the books are - but I've just never been keen on the topic on the topic in general. Usually I stay clear or them, or only read the book if it has very little to do with the subject.

  • 2. Religion.

  • Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against anyone who is religious. I'm an Atheist, and I just don't like reading books that are based solely around religion in general. A little of it is fine by me, but there are certain books that just go on and on about it throughout the entire novel. This just really irritates me, and I try to stay clear of ones that I know are going to be focusing on that subject in particular.

  • 3. Autobiographies.

  • As much as I love reading books, I'm not a huge fan of non-fiction. Usually, I'm really not interested in the person's life and how they grew up. So it'll be a rare occasion if I ever decide I want to read one. I'm not saying their autobiographies are boring; they're just not for me.

  • 4. Self-help.

  • I believe everyone's problems are individual, and a lot of the times, things that work for someone - can make things worse for something else. It's great if you find that self-help books ACTUALLY help, but I've read a few and just scoffed at them. I have a variety of problematic issues, and I find my own ways to deal with them. I don't think the authors of these books are helpful, and I kind of think they're acting like now-it-alls.

  • 5. Animal Characters.

  • As cute as the book seems, I really don't want to read a book where the main character is an animal. No matter what type of animal it is - I just don't. To be honest, I find them kind of boring and annoying. That's it.

  • 6. Cheating/Infidelity.

  • I am wholeheartedly AGAINST cheating in any way or form, especially when someone cheats on their boyfriend/girlfriend. I tend to stay clear of this topic, mainly because I get so frustrated at the characters and find myself wanting to wring their necks. No offense, but it's just not my cup of tea.

  • 7. Poetry.

  • As much as I want to love poetry, I've just never really gotten into it as much as I'd like. To me, poetry is something I was made to read/study in school and I was definitely not keen on it then. I'm trying to branch out in my reading, but at the moment I'm staying clear of poetry, at least until I find some that I actually enjoy.

  • 8. Sports.

  • I hate the majority of sports; it's as simple as that. I've never been a sporty girl, (can’t you tell?! XD) nor have I liked watching them. It's exactly the same with reading about them, they just don't interest me - and normally bore me to tears. If there's only a slight mention of it throughout the book, I don't mind. However, when the whole book is focused around it, it's a big no-no for me.

  • 9. Steampunk.

  • I'm not exactly sure what the book definition of Steampunk is, but I'm guessing it revolves around the industrial revolution time period, but it has a slightly modern twist to it? Tell me if I'm wrong, but it's definitely not my kind of thing. If I see a book that's Steampunk related, I generally run screaming in the opposite direction. (Slight exaggeration, but you get my drift.)

  • 10. Animal Cruelty.

  • I don't think I even have to explain this one. Who on earth wants to watch, let alone READ about this topic? The whole thought of it makes me burst into tears. I can't even begin to comprehend how ANYONE would want to intentionally hurt an animal, it's just sick.

Review: Parallel by Lauren Miller

Parallel
Title: Parallel.
Author: Lauren Miller.
Publication Date: June 6th, 2013.
Publisher: Scholastic.
Genres: Sci-Fi, Young Adult.
Format: Paperback, 381 pages.
Source: ARC Provided By Publisher.
My Rating:
Two worlds. Two separate identities. Two guys.

A collision of parallel universes leaves 18-year-old Abby Barnes living a new reality - every time her parallel makes a new decision. Never-without-a-plan Abby is forced to cope with the consequences of waking up in a life she has no memory of creating.

With chapters that alternate between our world (Here) and the parallel one (There), Abby's Here comes complete with a Yale address, a new roomie, and birthday blind date with a super-hot lacrosse player. In the parallel world, Abby's still navigating senior year class schedules, college applications, and her relationship with Astronomy Boy at her high school.

Review

I was a little hesitant to start reading Parallel at first; mainly because I was worried I wasn’t going to enjoy it as much as I wanted too. I’m glad to say my worries were really not warranted and I very much enjoyed it! Parallel is a fantastic and fun book with just enough humour to balance out some of the seriousness throughout it. Although it took me a while to get into it, I’m glad I pushed past the slow beginning in the book and continued to read on, it was definitely worth it!

Parallel

Abby is our main character, and I had mixed feelings about her – sometimes I’d find her really annoying and at others I quite liked her. Abby has a plan for everything, from what she’s going to be doing throughout her last year in high school, to wanting to land a job at a national newspaper. To be perfectly honest; I have respect for people who plan their futures so thoroughly, but I also find them incredibly intimidating - It kind of feels like they’re putting the rest of us to shame. Abby seemed like a fun, kind and caring character – she makes a lot of mistakes, but we all do – that’s what makes us human. Overall, although Abby definitely wasn’t one of my favourite characters I’ve read, I didn’t end up disliking her like I thought I was going to.

Caitlin is Abby’s best friend, and I absolutely adored their relationship! It was really heart-warming to see how wonderfully close they were and how much they relied on each other. Caitlin is a total science nerd, and it was really adorable how obsessed with it she was. I did find it a little hard to understand how quickly she believed Abby about her living her parallels live. To be honest, I found it kind of strange – but I think that’s probably just me, because I have a hard time accepting the possibility of a parallel universe actually existing in real life. Caitlin was an awesome character, caring and very funny – I really, really loved her! I wish it focused a little more on her throughout the book though, because I would have loved to read more about her.

As for the two love-interests; Michael and Josh - I wasn’t that keen on either of them to be honest. Although, when I got just over half way through Parallel, I really started to love Josh’s character. All of a sudden he seemed really sweet and just completely amazing – there were some amazing moments between Josh and Abby that I just loved and made me melt in a puddle on the floor. Michael just wasn’t the type of character that I like at all, he seemed a little self-absorbed and was pretty closed off from everyone. An air of mystery in a guy is really hot sometimes, but Michael just seemed uninteresting to me, and I didn’t think there was a lot of depth to his character.

Lauren Miller’s writing is beautiful and such a pleasure to read. The story flows wonderfully, although, I did get a bit confused at times when it switched between the here and there chapters. Once you get into the flow of the chapters and the constant time changing though, it’s easier to read and understand. Unfortunately, I did find myself having to flip back to the previous chapter quite a few times to reread things I’d already read beforehand to make sure I'd read it correctly. That’s the main reason why Parallel didn’t receive a 5 star rating, (It was close!) but I do believe it well and truly earned the 4 stars I’ve given it. Overall, Parallel was a fantastic and interested read and I’d recommend this book to anyone who’s a sucker for parallel universe novels or just sci-fi fans in general. I can’t wait to read more from Lauren Miller in the future; she’s definitely an author to look out for.

Quotes

We're all just a decision or two away from destroying the relationships that are most important to us and to the people we love. And most of the time, we never even know it.

“Fiona!” a male voice calls. A hulk of a guy in a shirt that could double as a bedsheet is waving from across the courtyard. His forearm is the size of my thigh.
“Be right there!” Fiona shouts. “My boyfriend,” she explains. “And yes, the size thing is an issue in bed. I once tried to straddle him and pulled my hamstring."

He’s still not looking at me, but I can see his tears spill over. He doesn’t even attempt to wipe them away. “What I feel... these aren’t someone else’s feelings, Abby. They can’t be. The way I love you...” His voice breaks. “Don’t tell me that’s not real.”

I'm not that far into it yet, but it’s quite good so far. I'm really not sure what I'm going to think about it overall, because it's a bit confusing so far. Oh well! I hope you've all had a great week, and I'll talk to you guys again soon! :D

Top Ten Tuesday: Authors Who Deserve More Recognition

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish.

Hey Book Nerds! ^.^ How are you all doing today? :) I'm good, I've been helping my dad repaint our hallway over the last few days - and it's really tiring work! I finished reading The Scorch Trials last night and I really enjoyed it! I was going to review it, as I reviewed the first book in the series, but I can't be bothered. It was a great book though and I gave it 4/5 stars. (I also accidentally spoiled the ending of The Death Cure by reading someone’s review! ;_;) Anyway, I only managed to think of 8 authors for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, but I hope you enjoy!

Top Ten Authors Who Deserve More Recognition

  • 1. Hannah Parry

  • Hannah was kind enough to send me her book for review a few months back - and to be perfectly honest; I hadn't heard of her beforehand. However, when I read her novel Isabella Rockwell's War, I found that her writing was really fantastic! Hannah is the reason I've branched out into reading more Historical Fiction novels, and I REALLY thank her for that! You can check out my review of Isabella Rockwell's War here.

  • 2. Cara Bertrand

  • I've only had the privilege to read one of Cara Bertrand's novels, but I love her already! Cara is a total sweetheart and an amazing writer. I read Lost In Thought earlier this year and it was such a fantastic book. She creates such wonderful characters and I can't believe she's not as well known! You can check out my review of Lost In Thought here.

  • 3. Rachel Caine

  • I know that a lot of people know about Rachel, especially because of her Morganville Vampire series. However, I've noticed that just because people know of her - doesn't mean they're reading her books! Rachel's writing is fantastic, and her Morganville Vampire series amazing and should definitely be read by more people.

  • 4. Nikki Jefford

  • Nikki Jefford has become more popular recently, but not as much as I think she deserves! I read one of her novels, Transfusion, for a blog tour earlier this year and it was really fantastic! Transfusion is a vampire-based novel, with such an original plot. She's also written a series about fairies, which I have yet to read, but I've heard nothing but good things about! You can read my review of Transfusion here.

  • 5. Lara Chapman

  • I've also only read one of Lara Chapman's novels, but the one I did read, Flawless - I COULN'T put down! It was such a fantastic book and it seems like a crime that she's not better known. Lara's writing is beautiful and flawless and I can’t wait to read more from her in the future. Go check her out!

  • 6. James Dawson

  • James Dawson, you're amazing! Everything about James' writing is really incredible and I can't recommend his book Hollow Pike strongly enough. The characters that James creates are brilliant and the air of mystery around everything throughout his book is amazing. Although I've only read the one book by him, I can't wait to read more him in the future!

  • 7. Gabriella Poole

  • Gabriella has written a book series about supernatural creatures of sorts, they may be relatively short (about 230 pages), but they don't leave anything out! Gabriella's writing is very detailed and has an air of mystery about it that I just love. I think she definitely deserves more recognition and I really encourage you to pick up her books!

  • 8. Jaimie Admans

  • I've spoken to Jaimie a few times, and not only is she a really lovely person - but she's an amazing writer, too! I participated in a blog tour for her novel, Afterlife Academy - and I'm SO glad I did. Jaimie's writing is fun and quirky and her characters are so relatable in so many different ways. I definitely recommend you check her out! You can check out my review of Afterlife Academy here.

E-Book Haul #5

Hey book nerds! :D How are you all doing today? :) I saw my friend Sarah for a few hours yesterday and I had a great time; we talked constantly for hours. :) I've not been doing much else though, and I apologise this isn't a physical book haul today, but I've just been so tired, the heat we've been having has wiped me out! Hopefully there will be one next week though. :) I did upload a YouTube video the other day; it's the Bookshelf Scavenger Hunt Tag, so if you're interested - go check that out! :D Lastly, I finished reading Uglies by Scott Westerfeld last night and I really enjoyed it! I remember reading parts of it when I was about thirteen, but apart from an odd snippet here and there, I couldn't remember anything. Anyway, that's it for me today - I hope you've all had a great week! :D

A big thanks to Random House Publishing who sent me an eGalley of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review! :)

Thoughts

I think all of these e-Books look so good and really interesting! :D I think the one I'm most excited about it probably Barbie Girl, I've heard so many amazing things about it, and I was going to buy it when it was 77p, but then I saw that it was free for a day and I jumped at the chance! The rest of them are freebies from Amazon, and I'm sure a lot of them will still be. :) My favourite cover though, is probably Dark Secrets - it's SO beautiful! The colours and photo and typography are gorgeous. ^.^ Have you read any of these books, or have you heard of them? Let me know! ^.^

Review: The Slither Sisters by Charles Gilman

Layout 1
Title: The Slither Sisters.
Series: Tales from Lovecraft Middle School #2.
Author: Charles Gilman.
Publication Date: January 15th, 2013.
Publisher: Quirk Books.
Genres: Paranormal, Middle-Grade.
Format: Hardback, 174 pages.
Source: Provided By Publisher.
My Rating:
Looks can be deceiving! Sarah and Sylvia Price may resemble ordinary middle school students, but they’re actually hideous monsters in disguise. Even worse, they’re campaigning for student council, with a secret plan for abducting the entire seventh grade!

The only ones brave enough to stop them are twelve-year-old Robert Arthur and his best friends: the school bully, the school ghost, and a very hungry two-headed rat.

This second novel of the Lovecraft Middle School series begins right where Professor Gargoyle ended – with more action, more adventure, and more outrageous monsters!

Review

Once again, I would like you all to take a moment to appreciate the awesomeness of another wonderfully done holographic cover. Isn’t it just fantastic? Now, on to the review! The Slither Sisters picks up right after the first book, Professor Gargoyle finished – and it definitely was a fantastic sequel. The ending of this novel took me completely by surprise and I really wasn’t expecting it at all. I always love reading books that aren’t too predictable, otherwise they become boring and I lose interest in them quite quickly. I’m very happy to say that I wasn’t constantly guessing correctly about what would happen throughout the book – it was a great read!

I really love Robert’s character, he may be a shy person in general, but there’s a noticeable difference in his confidence level since the first book. This may be because of all the scary things that are suddenly happening to him, but I think it’s because he now has two (three, if you could his two-headed rat) best friends who are there for him and he can confide in. Even though Robert’s character is still quite young, I think he’s really mature for his age and a joy to read about.

I also loved how Robert, Karina and Glenn’s friendship was more developed in The Slither Sisters. It was great to see how comfortable they all are around each other, even though they’re all very different in personalities. I loved how Robert was able to put behind him the fact that Glenn bullied him for years – and I also found it amazing how Glenn was actually sorry for it all and is trying to make it up to him.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading The Slither Sisters! It was certainly action-packed and I found it really hard to put down. I don’t think I found a single fault with this novel, and I love Charles Gilman’s writing style – it’s fun and fresh to read. I’ve probably mentioned this before, but I love the fact that, even though the series is for younger readers, the writing style isn’t immature in the slightest. The only reason the book series is getting 4 star rating so far instead of 5 stars, is because of it being a middle-grade series in general. When I give a book a 5 star rating, it’s usually because I found it absolutely incredible and mind-blowing. The Tales from Lovecraft Middle School is a really awesome series so far though and I can’t recommend it highly enough. I can’t wait to pick up the next book; Teacher’s Pest as soon as possible!

Quotes

He scanned the page looking for an entry that read, "Help! I'm Almost Thirteen Years Old and I Still Have the Muscles of a Third-Grader!" but apparently Robert's condition was so freakish and rare, the authors of the book didn't even bother to include it. - Page 21.

“They’re coming here every day. The question is, why?”
Robert wasn’t sure he wanted to know the answer. The last time he tried spying on someone, he’d witnessed his Science teacher, Professor Gargoyle, eating a live hamster. - Page 32.

Robert braced himself, preparing for the worst.
He expected horns to sprout from their heads. Or wings to burst from their backs. Or giant tongues to emerge from their mouths. He expected the girls to come charging down the stairs, claws extended, shrieking and screaming.
He certainly didn’t expect them to smile. - Page 50.

Waiting On Wednesday: Fault Line by Christa Desir

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Hey Book Nerds! :D Sorry there was no Top Ten Tuesday post yesterday, I just didn't really fancy doing this week’s one, plus, the weather in the UK has been so hot that I've barely been able to think. It's lovely to have sunny weather of course; we're just not used to this type of weather. xD Most of us Brits are all pale and pasty! Anyway, I finished reading The Slither Sisters last night and I really enjoyed it and I'm writing the review as we speak - hopefully it'll be up soon! I'm now currently reading Uglies by Scott Westerfeld and I'm really enjoying it so far. I remember reading the trilogy YEARS ago, when I was about 13 or 14, but I can barely remember anything, so I'm looking forward to finishing it. ^.^ That's it for today - I hope you've all had a great week so far! :D

Thoughts

I think this book looks really fantastic! I really love mystery novels of sorts - and this one looks really good. I think I have an idea of what might have happened to the main character at the party, but I'll keep that to myself for now. :P As for the cover, I kind of like it, but I kind of don't. I don't really see what it's got to do with the book, but we'll have to see! The effect of it is nice though. :P What do you guys think of the looks of this book, have you heard of it before? :) Let me know! ^.^
