Stacking The Shelves #32

Stacking The Shelves is hosted by Tyngas Reviews and is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. Including books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!

Hey book nerds! :D How are you all doing today? :) One of my neighbours dogs had a litter of puppies two weeks ago, and I was allowed to go see them yesterday afternoon! They're so cute and adorable. They've not opened their eyes and are just flopping around on their tummies to get fed by their mum. ;_; Cuteness overload! I really want one.. ^^; Unfortunately, my mum won't let us get another dog. Oh well. :3 As for my reading status, I finished reading My Soul To Save yesterday and I absolutely loved it! I'm now currently reading Boys, Girls and Other Hazardous Materials by Rosalind Wiseman, and I'm really enjoying it so far. Anyway, that's it for today - I hope you all had a great week! :D

Review: Professor Gargoyle by Charles Gilman

Professor Gargoyle
Title: Professor Gargoyle.
Series: Tales from Lovecraft Middle School, #1.
Author: Charles Gilman.
Publication Date: September 25th, 2012.
Publisher: Quirk Books.
Genres: Paranormal, Middle Grade.
Format: Hardback, 168 pages.
Source: Provided By Publisher.
My Rating:
Strange things are happening at Lovecraft Middle School. Rats are leaping from lockers. Students are disappearing. The school library is a labyrinth of secret corridors. And the science teacher is acting very, very peculiar. Robert Arthurt knew that seventh grade was going to be weird, but this is ridiculous!

With the help of some unlikely new friends, Robert discovers there's more to Lovecraft Middle School than meets the eye. Can he uncover the secrets of the school before it's too late?

Review

First off, can we take a moment to appreciate the awesomeness of the holographic cover? I’ve never seen anything like this on a book before! If you’ve not seen in real life before, on this one; the man is normal, but when you move, he turns into a creepy demon! Moving onwards...

I’ve personally not read a whole lot of middle grade novels, even when I was a younger kid; I went straight from reading kids books to reading young adult books and the Harry Potter series. I’ve never really been sure of the reasoning for this, maybe it’s because, even as a kid, I was way more mature for my age than anyone else I knew. So, when I found out Quirk Books were wanting people, including me, to review their middle school series, I jumped at the chance.

I was, however, a little wary about what I would think of the characters and the writing style. Usually younger characters really irritate me, this is because they’re usually portrayed as really immature (they’re kids – and kids are immature in general) and it just irks me. I’m really glad to say that I was very pleasantly surprised when I started reading Professor Gargoyle, because neither the characters nor the writing style was like that! Professor Gargoyle was such an amazing, quick and fun read. The book is primarily aimed at the younger age group, but I think even adults would really enjoy reading it as well.

Robert is our main protagonist; he’s twelve years old and lives with his mum who is constantly working. I loved his character - he was a little shy at first starting his new school, but generally quite funny, forgiving and such an innocent and relatable character. Roberts’s old School bully ends up attending his new middle school, and even though Robert had hoped the tormenting would have ended by now, he was wrong. I know exactly how it feels to be bullied, as I was bullied since I was a little kid, right up into adult-hood. I’m sure that pretty much everyone has been teased a little at least in their life-time, kids are just cruel and mean a lot of the time – and I found it really interesting to see Robert’s reaction to being bullied again. The anxiety of the possibility of having to see that person again, and feeling like you’re not able to stand up for yourself – all these emotions were played out really well in the book, creating a very relatable atmosphere.

The illustrations throughout the book were really beautiful and well done. I thought that they added a touch of personality to the book and made it really interesting just to look at in general. Charles Gilman’s writing style was great and such a joy to read, and I loved pretty much everything about the book. Although I did think the ending was a little too rushed – I also thought that it was finished really well, leaving the ending perfectly open for the next book in the series to continue on from.

Overall, I really loved reading this book - it was great to read something quick but fun and different from what I usually read for a change. I’ll definitely be continuing on this with series, because it feels impossible not too! I gave the book 4/5 stars, and I think it really deserved it - the extra star wasn’t given, mainly because of the shortness of the book, the rushed ending and how apprehensive I was about starting this series in the first place. I need to read more of this story as soon as possible – hopefully I’ll start reading the sequel, The Slither Sisters sometime soon!

Quotes

Robert looked from left to right and back again. Both girls had fair skin and long red hair. They looked so similar, they could have been sister.
In fact, they looked virtually identical.
“Wait a second,” he said. “Are you two-”
“Twins,” they said simultaneously, almost sighing, as if they were tired of answering the question. - Page 24.

Then there was a hideous snapping sound, and the bottom half of Goyle’s jaw collapsed. It fell open like the mouth of a ventriloquist’s dummy, revealing sharp white fangs and a gaping black maw. Goyle lowered the hamster between his lips and swallowed it whole. - Page 84.

“You’ve been a real jerk to me, Glenn. All the name-calling, the pushing, the shoving, the gummy worms. I used to wish that a giant monster would come out of nowhere and swallow you whole. I never thought it would actually happen.” - Page 110.

Waiting On Wednesday: Where The Stars Still Shine by Trish Doller

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Hey Book Nerds! :D How are you all doing? I have a question for you guys, I've been debating about picking up a copy of Game of Thrones, but the synopsis of the book doesn't really appeal to me. I know it's supposed to be really good, so should I just pick it up and give it a chance or not? :) I really can't decide. xD I've not got a whole lot else to say today, except I starting reading the second book in the Soul Screamers series, My Soul To Save, by Rachel Vincent yesterday and I'm loving it so far. The first book, My Soul To Take was one of my favourite reads from last year. Hopefully this one will be just as good. :) I hope you all have a great rest of the week!

Top Ten Tuesday: Books I've Read So Far In 2013

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish.

Hey Book Nerds! :D How are you all doing today? I hope you've all had a great weekend - mine was good. It was my Brother's 24th Birthday yesterday, so on Sunday evening we had a family get-together with cake and drinks. :) I don't get to see a lot my family that often, so it's great when I get the chance. Anyway, moving on - as you can tell, I'm starting a new meme this week! I've been interested in doing Top Ten Tuesday for a little while now, but just haven't managed to get round to doing my own post - so I'm really pleased to have finally done one! If I don't feel like doing one of these every Tuesday (or I don't like the weeks post) then I'll probably post a Teaser Tuesday - but until then - I'm looking forward to participating in this new meme. ^.^ Now, onto the meme!

Top Ten Books I've Read So Far In 2013

  • 1. The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa.

  • At first I was a little hesitant at picking this book up, but I was soon drawn into the amazing storyline and world Julie created. It was such an amazing book and the writing is absolutely wonderful - I couldn't put it down! It’s quickly become one of my favourite books and I can't praise it highly enough. It's one of those novels I wish I could rate higher than 5 stars.

  • 2. Die For Me by Amy Plum.

  • I absolutely adored this book! The entire thing blew my mind and I loved every minute I spend reading it. It was an extremely hard book to put down and had such a unique and interesting plot. The characters were lovely and the writing beautiful - it's a definite must read for anyone who loves books with paranormal aspects. (Plus, it's set in Paris!) I can't wait to devour the second novel in this trilogy.

  • 3. Pretty Girl Thirteen by Liz Coley.

  • I raved about this book so much to my mum, that she went online and bought herself a kindle copy - she loved it too! Pretty Girl Thirteen has to be one of my favourite books I've read so far - not just this year. It was such an incredible book, and beautifully written - I loved reading every minute of it. The whole storyline was just fantastic and I've never read anything like it before. I'd recommend this book to anyone, even if you're an adult, I'm sure you're going to love it!

  • 4. Hollow Pike by James Dawson.

  • I've not read a whole lot of books about Witches, and I wasn't entirely sure how I felt about the whole sub-genre. However, after reading Hollow Pike, I was completely swayed! Although the book doesn't focus on the whole aspect of witch craft, it's mentioned and woven into the story along with a lot of mystery. I loved this book so much; James Dawson's writing is flawless and captures the audience within the first few pages. I was such an incredible book and I'd recommend it to anyone!

  • 5. Partials by Dan Wells.

  • Wow. That's all the words I can muster for this book - I loved this book so much, that I can barely find the words to type this short paragraph, let alone a review. This book was really phenomenal! I've never read anything like it before, and it was just an incredible, post-apocalyptic novel with paranormal aspects of sorts woven in. The writing is incredible and the characters such a joy to read about. Why can't I rate it more than 5/5 stars?!

  • 6. The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting.

  • As many of you all know, I'm a huge sucker for murder mystery novels and this book was right up my street! Not only was there murder, but the main character has a special ability to find dead bodies - isn't that so awesome and unique? This novel was really fantastic and I devoured it in one of two sittings. I don't care if you don't like mystery novels - go read this one - you won't be disappointed, I swear!

  • 7. Vesper by Jeff Sampson.

  • This was a pretty quick read for me; I read it in one sitting because I just couldn't put it down! I'd heard mixed reviews on this novel, but was excited to start it - and oh my gosh - it was incredible. The story is being told by the main character to another character. At the end of each chapter, the pair discusses what has been said in the chapter. It sounds confusing, but it was really easy to read - and I definitely wasn't expecting a lot of the things that happened. It was just an incredible book that keeps you on edge and I loved reading it!

  • 8. Clarity by Kim Harrington.

  • Our main protagonist in this novel, Clarity, sees things when she touches objects - things like secrets and lies. Then a murder happens and Clary is asked to help with the investigation because of her gift. Throw in a hot new guy and an ex-boyfriend trying to win her back and you've got yourself the perfect novel in my opinion! I really enjoyed this book, it was so interesting and had a slightly different take on the whole psychic abilities. It was a fantastic book and the writing was absolutely wonderful. Bring on the sequel!

  • 9. The Nightmare Affair by Mindee Arnett

  • I'd been pining for this book for months and was finally granted access to it via NetGalley earlier this year, prior to the release date. The Nightmare Affair was extra-ordinary! I've read a lot of books with paranormal aspects, but nothing like this. The main character is a Nightmare. Literally. She can enter and control people’s dreams and ends up having to solve a murder. This incredible book combines two of my favourite genres to read about; paranormal and murder mystery! I loved this book so much and can't recommend it enough!

  • 10. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare.

  • I'd heard so many amazing things about this book/series in general that I knew I had to purchase myself a copy. Before I could, however, my mum brought me a copy for Christmas as a suprise. Her friend had read it and suggested it to my mum. I fell in love with this book and the entire world Cassandra Clare created when I read it. Her writing is flawless and incredibly detailed and interesting.

Review: The Madman's Daughter by Megan Shepherd

The Madman's Daughter
Title: The Madman's Daughter.
Series: The Madman's Daughter, #1.
Author: Megan Shepherd.
Publication Date: February 21st, 2013.
Publisher: Harper Voyager.
Genres: Historical Fiction, Re-telling, Young Adult.
Format: Paperback, 360 pages.

My Rating:
To uncover the truth means risking all...

London, 1894. Juliet Moreau has built a life for herself-working as a maid, attending church on Sundays, and trying not to think about the scandal that ruined her life. After all, no one ever proved the rumours about her father′s gruesome experiments. But when she learns her father is alive and continuing his work on a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations were true.

Yet what she finds on the island is twisted beyond all imagining, and out of her father’s control. As the island rapidly descends into chaos, she must escape the horrors of her father’s creations, but not before she discovers the true extent of her father’s genius – and madness – in her own blood.

Review

“His hand tangled in my hair, and his lips were inches away but he wouldn’t kiss me, torturing me with the space between us.”

The Madman’s Daughter was inspired by the novel The Island of Doctor Moreau, which was published in the late 1890’s. As I’d not read the original novel, I was a little worried of how I would get along with reading this retelling. As I started to read this book, I realised I definitely had nothing to fear at all – because after the first 20 or so pages, I was completely drawn into the world and characters Megan Shepherd has created. The book had me hooked from there on, and even now, hours after finishing it, I’m still going over the story in my mind.

I had a love/hate relationship with Juliet Moreau, our main protagonist. Whilst reading The Madman’s Daughter, half of the time I felt like she was a strong and really interesting character – and the other half I really hated her. I know that the novel is set in the 1890’s, but I felt that if she was bold enough to be doing some of the things she does in the novel, then she’d perfectly capable of looking after herself. She went from acting like she had a backbone, to behaving like a typical 18th century woman, embarrassed to be showing her ankles. However, overall, I really did like her character – she was interesting to read about and had quite a few blunt and witty remarks that constantly made me laugh.

Dr. Moreau was extremely smart, firm, devoted and totally and absolutely insane. It seemed that, as the novel progressed, so did his level of madness. With every page I turned, he seemed to slip further and further off the ledge of sanity. Even though Dr. Moreau was deranged and created sick and inhuman creations, I couldn’t help but be in awe of his intelligence. He was very unpredictable and obviously felt no remorse for his actions – even though he was putting the animals through so much pain. Some of the surgical scenes made me feel sick and made my heart ache – I can’t understand how anyone would want to hurt animals in general – let alone for science experiments. Isn’t the world developed enough? Megan Shepherd captured the insanity of Dr. Moreau perfectly, and it was perfectly obvious throughout the entire book that he didn’t care about anything or anyone but his experiments.

There are two other main male characters in the novel, aside from Dr Moreau; Montgomery and Edward - both of which are the possibly love-interests of Juliet throughout the book. I groaned inwardly when I realised there was a possibly love-triangle forming in The Madman’s Daughter. I’ve never been a fan of love triangles, but if I do read a book with them in, I usually have a favourite guy I’m rooting for. However, I really couldn’t decide who I preferred in this book, and it drove me insane wondering which guy Juliet would choose because she kept flitting about between the two. Talk about indecisive!

Montgomery was Juliet’s old servant from when she was a child; they grew up together and were extremely close friends. I loved reading about their prior relationship, and watching their friendship bloom once again. He was sweet, kind and interesting – and even though he wasn’t a proper gentleman by society’s standards, he always tried his best and I thought that it made him an even more of a wonderful character. I did, however, frown a little bit on how quickly loving feelings between Montgomery and Juliet rose. I know they knew each other from their past, but I found it hard to comprehend how Juliet could forgive him for doing the same work as her Father. It was all a little too quick and predictable in my opinion, but none the less, I really did like his character.

As for Edward, I wasn’t sure what to make of him at first; I was a bit wary of him and couldn’t understand why Juliet felt so drawn to him. Edward was found at sea in a life boat, half dead and delirious from sea madness. Once recovered though, he becomes very interested in Juliet, but hardly reveals anything about himself – creating this air of mystery and darkness around himself. However, as the novel progressed, you really got to see his character traits more. He was sweet and pretty much a perfect gentleman, and it was obvious to see from early on that he cared and worried about Juliet’s safety. Although I liked both Montgomery’s and Edward’s characters, they both acted extremely jealous in multiple places throughout the book, and I couldn’t help but laugh at their reactions – it’s like they were peacocks puffing up their feathers to show they were better than the other.

The Island that Megan has created was incredible, everything was so detailed and she definitely didn’t skimp on the gruesome parts. Even though it was a very detailed read, it wasn’t over done, and was written at such a level that gives you most of the details, but leaves the rest to your imagination. The Madman’s Daughter is a gory, gritty, grimy and down-right haunting book. The entire novel is dark and mysterious, and the only light throughout it is the relationship and friendship Juliet has between Montgomery and Edward. This novel is definitely not for the squeamish or faint-hearted - however, if you’re a fan of this sort of book, I’d most definitely recommend it!

My only complaint about this novel was the fact that I thought the ending of the book was quite rushed. It also didn’t seem as polished and perfect as the rest of the book, as though the author was just trying to get everything over and done with quickly – which I found very disappointing. Overall though, I absolutely adored this book. It was fast paced, action pact and grim – I loved every minute of reading it and I found it really hard to put down. The ending of the book absolutely killed me, and I found myself muttering absurdities under my breath at the last page. I wish it didn’t end the way it did, but I can see how the ending has been left open for future books in the series. I believe the 4/5 star rating fits the book perfectly because of the little things that niggled at me, but I can’t wait to pick up the sequel to The Madman’s Daughter and see where all the characters end up next.

Quotes

Now my eyes devoured the rabbit’s body, trying to match the fleshy bits of organ and bone to the ink diagrams I knew by heart. An urge raced through my veins to touch the striated muscle of the heart, feel the smooth length of the intestine. - Page 14.

I studied him closely. The sand still clung to his ear, and I reached up on impulse and brushed it off. His heartbeat sped at my touch. I wanted to believe him. But even if he was right, I knew that one didn’t have to be a creation to be a monster. My own family history proved that.
For a moment he stood a breath away. His fingers found my wrist and traced along the edge of my arm. He cleared his throat and looked ready to say something, but then he shook his head. ‘Good night, Juliet.’ He left slowly, as if he had to pry himself away before he did something improper. A growing part of me wished he’d stayed. - Page 219.

He pressed his lips into my palm, my knuckles, each of my fingertips, drowning me with a thousand waves of pleasure. He murmured my name. The sound of it on his lips, so aching, choked me with passion. I grabbed his collar, pulling our lips together. Not knowing if it was wrong or right or today or tomorrow. He hardly needed persuading. He kissed me back so hard the operating table shook beneath us. The surgical tray fell and tools crashed to the floor. I hardly noticed. He picked me up around the waist and sat me farther back on the table, leaning in, his chest rising and falling like a stormy tide. - Page 282.

I hope you’ve all had a great week so far! I’m not sure if there will be a Book Haul post this weekend and I’m really busy, but there will be next week. ^.^

Thoughts

Summaries from Good Reads. I really want to get my hands on all of these, they all look so fantastic! :D Two-Way Street looks like a really cute and fun read, I wish I could get my hands on it, I think it's the one I'm most excited about. Boy Nobody looks totally awesome! I'm guessing it's to do with an assassin? Or a spy of sorts - it's a 2013 release which is also really cool. ^.^ As for the last two, I came across them randomly when I was searching Amazon, and I've not heard a lot about them, but they look really good and I can't wait to pick them up. ^.^ Have you read any of my finds this week? Let me know! :)

To survive in a ruined world, she must embrace the darkness...

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a walled-in city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten. Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them—the vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself dies and becomes one of the monsters.

Forced to flee her city, Allie must pass for human as she joins a ragged group of pilgrims seeking a legend—a place that might have a cure for the disease that killed off most of civilization and created the rabids, the bloodthirsty creatures who threaten human and vampire alike. And soon Allie will have to decide what - and who - are worth dying for.

Review

“Hunger flickered, always there, but I pushed it down. I was a vampire. Nothing would change that. But I didn't have to be a monster.”

Wow, I really don’t know where to start with this review but this book was incredible! This was the first book I’ve read by Julie Kagawa, and I’d heard so many great things about this particular book, that I couldn’t wait to pick it up. I was, however, a little apprehensive about it as well – on rare occasions I find myself disliking a book that is so loved. I have no idea why – but I’m so glad to say this was not the case in reading The Immortal Rules.

The entire world Julie created in this book was absolutely phenomenal. The story is gritty and grimy, and doesn’t spare any of the nasty and gory details. Straight away, we’re thrown into a world where Vampires reign and the humans are like blood cattle, penned in to keep them from leaving and to stop the rabids from coming in.

I absolutely adored Allie’s character; she’s smart, caring and very independent. I loved how she could take care of herself, no matter the situation and wasn’t sitting around crying when danger came along. Allie was a really strong character, and tried her best not to let her emotions cloud her judgement. It was amazing to see how strong Allie’s determination to live was, even if it meant becoming a Vampire – she was definitely a kick-ass character, especially when wielding her katana!

Zeke is the love-interest in this novel, although I say ‘love-interest’ very loosely. The novel doesn’t revolve around Zeke’s and Allie’s relationship, which I loved. Zeke is cute, honest, sweet, kind, funny and just an amazing character overall. If I could have him for myself, I definitely would! He puts so many male characters I’ve grown attached to in the past to shame. It’s really easy to tell how anyone could fall in love with him.

Allie and Zeke’s relationship was incredible. They’re both such guarded characters, and I loved watching their relationship grow. Their feelings for each other are definitely not insta-love – it’s so realistic and relatable. I thought their relationship was just perfect and builds up slowly and gradually. On many places throughout this book was I was screaming inside at them, I just wished they would get on with it and kiss already – but I knew in my mind that it just wasn’t the time for them.

Even though the first few pages of the novel were a little slow, it doesn’t take long to be drawn into the story and become engaged with the characters. The entire book was an emotional rollercoaster for me; I felt every sting of betrayal, every pain and ache that the characters went through. I cried along with the characters and laughed with them as well. All the emotions in The Immortal Rules were so raw and amazing that I just couldn’t help not feeling them.

Overall, I really did think this book was amazing and I don’t have any complaints about it at all. The novel is fast-paced, but not at all confusing and I loved every minute of reading it. It was definitely a book I found extremely hard to put down! I’d recommend this book to anyone, even people who aren’t huge fans of paranormal aspects, because it’s just a fantastic book that I believe could draw in everyone. Julie Kagawa’s writing is beautiful and creepy and intense at the same time and I can’t wait to read the sequel to this incredible book. I believe the 5/5 star rating was well and truly eared and If I could rate it more, I definitely would.

Quotes

“Sometime in your life, Allison Sekemoto, you will kill a human being. Accidentally or as a conscious, deliberate act. It is unavoidable. The question is not if it will happen, but when. Do you understand?” - Page 96.

I wasn't thinking of his blood, rushing just below the skin. I wasn't thinking of his heartbeat or his touch or the pulse at his throat. Right now, all I was thinking of was Zeke. - Page 410.

'We are vampires,' Kanin had told me, on one of our last nights together. 'It makes no difference who we are, where we came from. Princes, Masters and rabids alike, we are monsters, cut off from humanity. They will never trust us. They will never accept us. We hide in their midst and walk among them, but we are forever separate. Damned. Alone. You don’t understand now, but you will. There will come a time when the road before you splits, and you must decide your path. Will you choose to become a demon with a human face, or will you fight your demon until the end of time, knowing you will forever struggle alone?' - Page 484.
