Review: The Stone Guardian by Theresa McClinton

The Stone Guardian
Title: The Stone Guardian.
Series: Stone Legacy, #1.
Author: Theresa McClinton.
Publication Date: December 14th, 2012.
Publisher: Etopia Press.
Genres: Fantasy, Mythology, Young Adult.
Format: Kindle eBook.
Source: Provided By Author.
My Rating:
When myth becomes reality, reality becomes a nightmare.

Like any other teenager in America, Ashley just wants a normal life. But growing up in an orphanage for the insane is anything but normal. After endless therapy and increasing medication, her nightmares have only gotten worse. Probably because they’re not nightmares.

When Ashley’s mysteriously abducted, she finds a reality even less normal than the orphanage. And she discovers something else—she’s no ordinary orphan. Faced with enemies thought to only exist in fairy tales, Ashley discovers she possesses a powerful Maya bloodline. She’s the daughter of an ancient Maya Guardian, whose duty is to protect the Stone of Muuk’ich, an enchanted relic blessed by the gods. But first she must get it back from Sarian, a power-hungry demigod who slaughtered the last guardian—Ashley’s mother. Without the stone, all will be lost.

When she meets Arwan, a hot Belizean time bender, his delicious olive skin and dark eyes make her feel a little less alone. But his gentle whispers and reassuring touch might not be all they seem. How can she balance love and duty when it’s up to her to prevent the rising of the underworld? Especially when the guy she loves might be its crown prince...

Review

I was sent an e-Book copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. I have to say I have mixed feelings about this book. It has such great potential and I believe that the author did a very good job.

Ashley was abandoned at an early age, and has grown up in an orphanage for mentally unstable teenagers. Ashley has awful panic attacks and dreams that are all too real. If Ashley is hurt in her dream, it happens to her in real life. The only person she can rely on is her best friend, Tara – who is her shoulder to cry on and as close to a sister as she’ll ever have. Countless doctors and psychiatrists having been telling Ashley that she’s ill and of need of help, and she’s grown to believe that they’re right. That she’s insane - except she isn’t. When Ashley and Tara are kidnapped one evening during a fire drill, she finds herself tucked away in a house in the hills of Belize and finds out that the man stalking her in her dreams is actually real.

She also learns that her captors are not captors at all, but her long lost family – her uncle and cousin. Ashley soon learns that she’s destined to be The Stone Guardian, a person whom guards an ancient and powerful Mayan stone that her diseased mother used to guard. However, the stone is not in the possession of the ‘good guys’ anymore, but was stolen seventeen years ago from her mother by her enemy, Sarian. Together with her new found family - Arwan; a totally hot time bender and Peter; a healer – Ashley sets out to claim the stone back and finally bond with it to become its primary protector.

I was hooked on this book from the very start, the premise was fantastic and I found it hard to put it down. However, even though I found this book a pleasure to read – it was not without its faults. There wasn’t a whole lot of world building and I found myself confused about what was happening some of the time. I also found that the plot moved a little too fast, jumping right from one event to another, with barely any breather in-between.

I really liked Ashley’s character and I thought she was very loyal; however she was a little wishy-washy at times, a bit of a pushover and was easily swayed by other people’s decisions. Ashley was probably one of the most emotional characters I’ve ever read – not that that’s a bad thing! She’s had a pretty awful life, living in an orphanage all her life, and having psychiatric medications pushed upon her – she finds can only trust her best friend, Tara. Even though I liked her character a lot, I did think she wept way too much – there was always a scene where she was crying hysterically. Either she was just a very emotional person or she was probably depressed – I wished this was covered in the book.

Arwan is a time-bender, someone who has special abilities like Ashley, but can manipulate time. He also has a smoking hot body, as Ashley can’t help but notice constantly. The minute Arwan see’s Ashley; he falls for her and vows to protect her – not because she’s The Stone Guardian, but because she fills a void in his heart that was created by the death of his mother some years ago. I loved Arwan’s character, he was so sweet and caring, even though he acted like a selfish idiot at times, I thought he was great all the same.

Something this novel had that I hoped it wouldn’t was insta-love. I have to say, I’m not a fan of insta-love at all. I don’t believe in love at first sight, I believe two people can meet and be attracted to each other, but love comes much later. The minute Ashley and Arwan meet, there’s a connection and they have the hots for each other – which is perfectly fine and understandable. However, a day or so later, they’re ‘in love’. I believe their relationship could have been better developed, but their romance was sweet, which made the insta-love a little bit more bearable.

Overall, I really loved reading this book – I thought it was amazing. Unfortunately I had to bump it down to 4/5 stars because of the various little problems and titbits that annoyed me. The characters were great; although some of them were a little under developed they were enjoyable to read all the same. It was an original read, with a fantastic plot – not to mention the cliff-hanger ending! I can’t wait until the next book is released and to find out what happens next.

Hey book nerds! :3 I hope you're all doing well. (: I'm having to fight off my cat, Luna for the seat in my desk chair at the moment and I think I've lost - seeing as I'm kneeling on the floor in front of my desk and she's on the chair... ^^; Any who, I've started watching the TV series Ugly Betty, and I'm really enjoying it. :P I didn't think I'd like it as much as I do. :) As for reading wise, I've actually not done a whole lot of it lately, I've just been really distracted so I'm still on If I Stay, but hopefully this evening I'll be able to read some more. :)

Friday Finds

But for Liz, nothing seems worse; she wants to experience her 16th birthday, she wants to get her drivers' licence, she wants her old life back again! She spends her hours mourning for what, and who she has lost. But is it possible that a life lived in reverse is no different from a life lived forward? And can Liz ever find peace in a world so different, yet so similar to her own?

Skin Deep by Laura Jarratt.
Ugly people don't have feelings. They're not like everyone else. They don't notice if you stare at them and turn away. And if they did notice, it wouldn't hurt them. They're not like real people. Or that's what I used to think. Before I learned...

After the car crash that leaves her best friend dead, Jenna is permanently scarred. She struggles to rebuild her life, but every stare in the street, every time she looks in the mirror, makes her want to retreat further from the world. Until she meets Ryan. Ryan's a traveller. When he and his mother moor their narrow boat on the outskirts of a village, she tells him this time it will be different. He doesn't believe her; he can't imagine why this place shouldn't be as unwelcoming as the rest. Until he meets Jenna. But as Jenna and Ryan grow closer, repercussions from the crash continue to reverberate through the community. And then a body is found...

Breathless by Jesscia Warman.
When Katie Kitrell is shipped off to boarding school by her distant father and overbearing mother, it doesn’t take her long to become part of the It Crowd. She’s smart, she’s cute, and she’s an Olympic-bound swimmer who has a first class ticket to any Ivy League school of her choice. But what her new friends, roommate, and boyfriend don’t know is that Katie is swimming away from her past, and from her schizophrenic older brother, Will, who won’t let her go. And when he does the unthinkable, it’s all Katie can do to keep her head above water.

Shadowlands (Shadowlands, #1) by Kate Brian.
Rory Miller had one chance to fight back and she took it. Rory survived… and the serial killer who attacked her escaped. Now that the infamous Steven Nell is on the loose, Rory must enter the witness protection with her father and sister, Darcy, leaving their friends and family without so much as a goodbye.

Starting over in a new town with only each other is unimaginable for Rory and Darcy. They were inseparable as children, but now they can barely stand each other. As the sisters settle in to Juniper Landing, a picturesque vacation island, it seems like their new home may be just the fresh start they need. They fall in with a group of beautiful, carefree teens and spend their days surfing, partying on the beach, and hiking into endless sunsets. But just as they’re starting to feel safe again, one of their new friends goes missing. Is it a coincidence? Or is the nightmare beginning all over again?

Summaries from Good Reads. First off, let me start by saying that ALL these book covers are gorgeous! Unfortunately I just don't have the money right now to pay full price for it. D: Oh well! What do you think of my finds this week?

It is a good book so far and I'm enjoying it. ^.^ As for the cover, I actually kind of like it! I wasn't too keen on it at first, but the more I looked at it, the more I liked it. Hey book nerds! :D How are you all doing today? It snowed the day before yesterday - which is quite rare for my part of the country - and because the temperature hasn't risen, it's not melted! It's so awesome; I'm like a little kid again. :P Anyway, I finish Matched last night and I really liked it, I gave it 4/5 stars. After I put that book away I started Secret Lives, which is the first book in the Darke Academy series, and I really like it so far! :) Lastly, I'm sorry if this post is a bit late, I had it written out this morning whilst I was uploading my YouTube video, but when I went to add the video to the post, the post had disappeared! >.> So I had to rewrite it, which sucked...

All of these books I purchased from The Works, which is a British Book store that sells books really cheaply! I only spend £1.99 on each book and there was also a ‘3 books for £5’ deal AS WELL AS 10% off any order over £10. So I saved quite a bit! ^.^ I'm really excited about starting all these books and I'm so glad I managed to get a hold of them. :P If I had to pick one that I was most excited about reading though, I'd have to be either; The Immortal Rules or My Soul To Save. :D What do you guys think of my purchases for this week, have you read any of them? :3

My amount of followers suddenly shot up yesterday and I'm already at 41 followers, yikes! ^.^ I think some of them are due to YA-Aholic, so thanks Haley, you're awesome. ^.^ I progressed a bit further with Matched yesterday, but not at all today. I'm finding it good, but a little slow! It's definitely not a book that's WOWing me or one I can't seem to put down, but oh well - I'm still liking it! :)

Liebster Blog Award

I've been nominated for a Blog Award! How crazy is that? :D I've only been blogging since the end of September, yet I feel like I've been doing it for years. I love my blog and my wonderful followers. So thank you all for being awesome. ^.^ Also, I'd like to thank, Sarah from Book-A-Holic for nominating me - it was so nice of her! :D I'm still trying to figure out why she thought my blog was good enough, but I'm trying not to question it. ^.^ I've never been nominated for anything before, so this is an honour! :3

Rules

1. Thank your Liebster Blog Award presenter on your blog and link back to the blogger who presented this award to you.

2. Answer the 11 questions from the nominator, list 11 random facts about yourself and create 11 questions for your nominees.

3. Present the Liebster Blog Award to 11 blogs of 200 followers or less who you feel deserve to be noticed and leave a comment on their blog letting them know they have been chosen. (No tag backs)

4. Copy and paste the blog award on your blog.

Questions From Sarah

1. Why did you start blogging?
Well, I've always wanted to work my own blog, yet could never seem to stick at it. I had a Beauty Blog and YouTube account, because I'm a make-up enthusiast, but I always felt rediculous. However, when I found the book blogging community, I knew that's what I wanted to do. To share my love of books with everyone, and to keep track of my reading - so I started my blog. :)

2. If you could meet any author alive or dead who would it be and why?
It would have to be J.K. Rowling. :) Harry Potter is my childhood, and I've been following Harry Potter ever since I could remember. My mum used to read the books to me and my siblings whilst we all sat in the lounge and listened. Eventually, we ended up getting the Audio Tapes, read by Stephen Fry, and we'd listen to them instead. I think it was a bit of relief for my mum! :P The audio tapes are old and worn out now, but we still listen to them to this day. :)

3. What is your favorite novel that you were forced to read in school?
Probably Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare! At first, it felt like such a hardship, having to read the book in English class and having to dissect it and break it down. But when I actually got into the book, I found that I fell in love with it! I actually found myself looking forward to English so I could read some more and found it easy to answer the questions we were asked about it. :)

4. If you could travel to any world from a book which would it be and why?
Definitely the world of Harry Potter! When I was younger I used to wish that it was real and that I was a witch. I'd give anything to be able to go to Hogwarts. (: I don’t really have a proper explanation, other than the fact that it’s a story world I love! :D

5. If you could be friends with any book character who would it be?
Probably Chloe, from The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong. I think she's an awesome character and I also think we'd get along really well. :)

6. What is your favorite color?
Well, my favourite colour has changed so much! I used to change my favourite colour every month when I was younger, because I love loads of different shades and hues. However, whilst I got older, I stopped on my particular favourite - Purple! :D

7. What is your favorite thing about blogging?
Probably receiving feedback from other book bloggers and reading the lovely comments I get. Also, I love meeting and talking to people who have the same obsession as myself. :P Some of my friends do read, but not to the same extent as I do, nor always the same genres. So it's always great talking to people who have read the same books and are excited for the same pre-releases. ^.^

8. What is the one thing that bothers you most in books (pet peeve)?
Probably Insta-Love! It really irritates me. I don't believe the characters can meet for the first time and be in love straight away. I mean; there’s attraction, lust and wanting to be with the person - that's fine - but sudden, heart-breaking, soul-destroying love? No way! Especially if the characters don't know anything about each other, yet claim they love each other already. It just really irks me when authors write like that, because it doesn't happen in real life.

9. What was your favorite book of 2012?
Wow, I'm not enterily sure! I read so many incredible books last year that it's hard to pick. However, if I had to narrow it down to one, it'd have to be: The DUFF by Kody Keplinger. I was expecting to like it, quite a bit actually. But I wasn't expecting to fall in love with it! It's only a contemporary novel, but I thought it was incredible and I really loved it. The chemistry between the two characters made me swoons. (Yes! I used the word swoon. :P)

10. Have there been any books that you have read recently that have suprised you? Which ones?
Yes, there have been one or two. Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick is one. I wasn't expecting much from it actually, but picked it up because of all the people who've loved it and recommended it. I'm not a huge fan of Angels, but I found myself pleasantly surprised that I actually loved it! :D

11. Who is your number one book boyfriend?
Well, there's Severus Snape from Harry Potter, who's my book Husband. I'm totally obsessed with Severus and very much in love with him. :3 But as for a book boyfriend, probably; Jace from City of Bones. He's so dark, and mysterious and cute, I just want to pounce on him! Anyone noticing a bit of a pattern here? I love dark, brooding, mysterious and snarky characters... They are the best! >:D

Review: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

City of Bones
Title: City of Bones.
Series: The Mortal Instruments, #1.
Author: Cassandra Clare.
Publication Date: March 27th, 2007.
Publisher: Walker Books.
Genres: Paranormal, Fantasy, Young Adult.
Format: Paperback, 442 pages.
Source: Bought.
My Rating:
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder—much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It’s hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing—not even a smear of blood—to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary’s first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It’s also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace’s world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know...

Review

Clary thinks she’s just a normal, 15 year old girl. I mean, she pretty much is; living in Brooklyn with her artist mother and hanging around with her best friend, Simon. That is until one night at an under-age club called Pandemonium, she sees a group of three teenagers killing what looks like a boy. However, no one else can see them - there’s no blood, and no sign of any disturbance at all. Clary shouldn’t have been able to see these three mysterious teenagers at all, she’s a “mundane”, a human – and doesn’t have the sight to see them. But is she really? Has her mother been lying to her about who she really is? When her mother is kidnapped one evening, Clary is attacked by a demon and is rescued by Jace, one of the three teenagers she saw at the club. Soon she learns that Jace, Isabelle and Alec are Shadowhunters, born and bred to kill demons. With the help of her new friends, Clary learns more and more about the Underworld and her past and goes on a mission to save her mother.

I feel like I must be the last person in the book blogging community that hadn't read this book before! I’m not always a huge fan of Fantasy books, I mean, I’ve never read Lord of The Rings or anything else that’s along those lines - unless you count Harry Potter in that category. I was a little reluctant to add this book to my TBR list, but I heard so many great reviews and ravings about it, I just had to at least try to get my hands on it. I received a surprise copy for Christmas from my parents and I was actually very excited. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it and was instantly drawn into the story. I loved this novel, it was incredible.

I loved Clary’s character, right from the beginning. She’s such a typical teenager; fighting with her mum, and ignoring her calls - which made me smile. There was something about her that was so natural and refreshing. She starts off as this timid girl, but as the book progresses she really grows into herself, becoming more confident, and quite frankly; a bad ass. Clary is a strong protagonist and quite headstrong at times, but I still loved her. Plus, she’s a red-head, so I’ll give her extra points!

Simon’s character actually really irritated me. I mean, there’s jealously, but there’s also over the top, annoying and head banging against the wall jealously that makes you want to slap the person senseless. That’s how I felt when I read most scenes with Simon in, I mean, MAN UP, BOY! Apart from that his character was okay, Simon is Clary’s best friend, and has been for 10 years. I thought their friendship was amazing, and I knew Simon would do anything for Clary if she asked.

As for Jace - why is it that I'm always attracted to the dark, mysterious, bad boy look-a-like characters in books? I wish I could pounce on Jace, because I loved him so much. He makes me swoon and go all giggly and girly. No one ever said that was a bad thing though, right? He has this hard exterior that says, ‘get lost’, but all I want to do is wrap my arms around him and give him a cup of hot-chocolate with marshmallows and cream. Underneath that hard exterior though, is a sweet, kind and caring guy. I can’t begin to explain how much I wish he was real.

Although I gave this novel 5/5 stars; I was not happy with the ending - at all. So much so, that it nearly made me bump it down a star – but didn’t because the overall book was still incredible. Still, it was one of those rare times that I wanted to bend my rules of romance just to make myself happy in my imagination. When I reached the end of this book, I was filled with such mixed emotions and there was a little voice in my head, yelling various insults at Cassandra Clare, telling her she needed to change that ending. I was also, however, spewing a random stream of annoyance out loud. Mostly along the lines of;
“SERIOUSLY?!”
“That did not just happen! How can they do that?”
“Oh come on!”
“HOW COULD YOU?! Kill me now!”

I also found myself bashing my head against the arm of the sofa. I know I’m being a little over-dramatic but I'm filled with such love for this book, yet also with such frustration! There were so many different twists and turns throughout this novel that I found it a little hard to keep up, however that didn’t deter me. The storyline was constantly building and growing, the world building was incredible and I didn’t know what would happen next. Only once did I predict correctly what was going to happen, even though I guessed many times!

I loved Cassandra Clare’s writing style; it’s so different and unique. I really need to get my hands on the sequel to this book, pronto!

Quotes

"I know what it means," Clary snapped.
"No, you don't, you just think you do. Magic is a dark and elemental force, not just a lot of sparkly wands and crystal balls and talking goldfish."
"I never said it was a lot of talking goldfish, you-"
Jace waved his hand, cutting her off. "Just because you call an electric eel a rubber duck doesn't make it a rubber duck, does it? And God help the poor bastard that decides they want to take a bath with the duckie."
"You're driveling," Clary observed. - Page 82.

He took something out of his jacket and handed it to her. It was a long thing dagger in a leather sheath. The hilt of the dagger was set with a single red stone carved in the shape of a rose.
She shook her head. "I wouldn't even know how to use that-"
He pressed it into her hand, curling her fingers around it.
"You'd learn." He dropped his voice. "It's in your blood."
She drew her hand back slowly. "All right."
"I could give you a thigh sheath to put that in," Isabelle offered. "I've got tons."
"CERTAINTLY NOT," said Simon.
Clary shot him an irritated look. "Thanks, but I'm not really a thigh sheath kind of girl." She slid the dagger into the outside pocket on her backpack. - Page 200.

"Drive fast, mundane," he said. "Drive like hell was following you."
Simon drove. - Page 330.

D: Although, that isn’t uncommon for Britain. I apologise for the awful lighting in my video, the sun didn't come out when I filmed it, and it's been miserable and freezing! ;_; Also, I'm sorry that the position keeps changing in every video, I've been trying to find one that'll be best but I still haven't found one yet! I started reading The Lying Game by Sara Shepherd last night and I really love it! :D It's great to far. ^.^ I hope you’ve had a great week. (:

Review: Breathe by Sarah Crossan

Breathe
Title: Breathe.
Series: Breathe, #1.
Author: Sarah Crossan.
Publication Date: October 2nd, 2012.
Publisher: Bloomsbury.
Genres: Dystopia, Post-Apocalyptic, Young Adult.
Format: Paperback, 384 pages.
Source: Provided By Publisher.
My Rating:
When oxygen levels plunge in a treeless world, a state lottery decides which lucky few will live inside the Pod. Everyone else will slowly suffocate. Years after the Switch, life inside the Pod has moved on. A poor Auxiliary class cannot afford the oxygen tax which supplies extra air for running, dancing and sports. The rich Premiums, by contrast, are healthy and strong. Anyone who opposes the regime is labelled a terrorist and ejected from the Pod to die.

Sixteen-year-old Alina is part of the secret resistance, but when a mission goes wrong she is forced to escape from the Pod. With only two days of oxygen in her tank, she too faces the terrifying prospect of death by suffocation. Her only hope is to find the mythical Grove, a small enclave of trees protected by a hardcore band of rebels. Does it even exist, and if so, what or who are they protecting the trees from? A dystopian thriller about courage and freedom, with a love story at its heart.

Review

“Oxygen is essential for most living things. For 2.5 billion years, it was the most abundant chemical element on Earth. Until the Switch.”

The world is in disrepair. Global warming has devastated the entire planet and the humans have cut down all the trees as the population grew. The seas have been polluted and destroyed and the oxygen levels are incredibly low. The remaining survivors have found a way to survive; Pod’s have been erected around the globe by the Corporation Breathe. Inside the Pod’s, the survivors breathe in clean and clear air, although it’s limited. You can’t run, dance, sing or do anything that’ll use up extra oxygen if you’re an “Auxiliary” – a person who is as low down on the totem pole as you can get. These people have to pay for their air, and get taxed if they use more than their daily allowance.

Premiums however, don’t have to pay for their air – these people are right at the top and as rich as can be. The Premiums can do whatever they like, and are treated with respect. Our story follows three teenagers who venture out of the pod; Quinn, who is a Premium, Bea; Quinn’s best friend who is an Auxiliary and Alina; who’s part of the Resistance. Together, with only two days worth of air strapped in tanks to their backs, the three try to work together to save the rest of the people in the Pod from the Breathe Corporation.

Wow, this book was incredible, with such an original storyline too! At random intervals during this novel, I was a bit sceptical as to what direction it was heading in, but it always worked out – and I don’t believe it could have been written differently. The book is rather fast paced, moving from one scene to another quite quickly, building suspense and drawing it out at times. Sometimes it felt like one minute the characters were eating their dinner and the next something explodes or someone dies – but I didn’t mind this at all.

The novel is broken down into multiple view points of our three main characters; Quinn, Bea and Alina. I love reading the different characters perspectives of what’s happening and how they’re really reacting to situations around them. A lot of the time, people mask their true feelings; they could be happy on the outside, yet drowning in grief on the inside. So it’s always great to read how the other characters are actually feeling for a change, rather than a guessed analysis from another character.

First off, we have Quinn – a Premium. The Premium’s are the elite kind; the people who are high up on the totem pole and are very, very rich. Quinn’s father works for the Breathe Corporation and can provide his family with as much oxygen as they want. Although he comes from a high-class background, Quinn is nowhere near stuck up and doesn’t take what he has for granted. He always wants to help his best friend, Bea – paying for their oxygen for their camping trip they take outside the Pod and caring profusely for Bea, like she were his sibling. Many of the times whilst I was reading Quinn’s point of view, I found myself laughing. He’s such an upbeat person with a good sense of humour, yet fails to see how Bea really feels about him. Honestly! Why are men so blind?

Secondly we have Bea, who was my favourite character. Bea is an “Auxiliary”, the lowest of the low - way down on the totem pole of society. She keeps her head down and tries not to use up excess oxygen her family can’t afford to pay for. Bea’s a kind-hearted, helpful and good person, who may seem like a goody-two-shoes at times, but in reality she’s actually just following her heart and listening to her conscience. I really respect that about Bea’s character, she’s grown up believing all the lies that have been fed to her, yet when she starts learning the truth, she strives to do what’s right. Bea is also hopelessly in love with Quinn, her best friend. Unfortunately for her, he’s as dense as a brick when it comes down to it. Poor girl! So, I think it’s pretty hard not to love her character.

Lastly we have Alina. Alina is part of the Resistance, a group of people that has taken a stand against the Pod’s government, most of whom live outside the Pod in the outlands. The resistance wants to plant trees and plants, and has been doing so, trying to keep them away from the destructive hands of the Pod’s Government. I didn’t particularly like Alina’s character very much if I’m perfectly honest. Although she was on the lower end of the totem pole in the Pod, an “Auxiliary”, she really irritated me for some reason. I did like her a bit more as the book progressed, she became less hostile and bit more friendly and caring - but she was hardly my favourite character of the week. Over all I just thought she was a bit stuck up and a bit of a snob.

The romance in this book was very minimal, which is usually a bit of a downer to me - however, Bea is deeply devoted to Quinn, and Quinn can’t seem to take his eyes off Alina’s ‘assets’. Quinn’s attitude around Alina is hilarious and although I’m a big sucker for romance, I didn’t mind that this book was lacking in it. There were still the soppy and romantic thoughts from Bea randomly throughout the book and the hilarity of Quinn trying way too hard to impress Alina. These kept me going whilst reading it, and I loved the ending.

Overall, the characters weren’t hugely developed, but I thought that the pace and excitement throughout the novel made up for it. I rated this book as 4/5 stars, mainly because I would of loved to read more about the world building with more detail, rather than just a page of two of writing about how the Pod came to be. Also, I do think that the story was a little lacking in emotion – with all the murder, lying and the inability to breathe outside the pod. I feel it could have been played up a bit more, not so much to a point where it would wrench your heart out - but so you could feel the characters pain more. I do hope the sequel will be more developed and built upon.

Still, I found this novel amazing and I really loved it, Sarah Crossan’s writing is intriguing, interesting and brilliant. I can’t wait for the sequel to be released so I can get my hands on it and devour it!

Quotes

We are in Zone One, with its clean boulevards and mirrored buildings. Every person we pass is pristinely dressed, with face masks strapped to their self-satisfied faces and connected to air tanks tied to their hips. They are all Premiums, of course, and when they see us, their gazes shift away. Ever so slightly. - Page 06.

No matter what happens outside, we are sheltered here: no rain or snow in the winter, no humidity or heat in the summer. The temperature is always perfect and the air always clear; the pod protects us from every element. - Page 40.

'I want to know who you were with and where he went. Does your family live in the pod? How about your friends? What have you been doing out here? Planting? Cultivating the earth?' The general laughs. 'You people don't seem to realise that what you're doing is pointless. Do you know how long it would take to re-oxygenate the planet? A millennium. And by that time you'll be long dead.'
'Then why are you chasing us?' Inger shouts. - Page 204.

Hey book nerds! :3 I hope you're all doing well. ^.^ I'm great myself, and I hope you're having a great week - TGI Friday! xD The Pretty Little Liars TV show has started up again this week after it's mid-season break - so me and my mum are really pleased it's back on. :) As for my reading and such, I've finished Breathe and have written a review of it, along with one for City of Bones, both will be up soon. I started reading The Declaration by Gemma Malley last night and I think it's quite good so far. Also, don't forget to enter in my current giveaways. (:

Friday Finds

Things take a turn for the weird when Nicole soon discovers she is actually hovering between life and death. Her body is lying in the forest while her spirit is searching for anyone who can hear her. Unfortunately the only person who can is Dale Finnigan, the guy she publicly humiliated with a sharp-tongued insult that has left him branded. Desperate, Nicole has no choice but to haunt Dale and convince the freaked-out senior to help her. Will he find her body before it's too late? Or will the guy who tried to kill her with his car, beat him there and finish her off before anyone finds out?

Where It Began by Ann Redisch Stampler.
Gabby Gardiner wakes up in a hospital bed looking like a cautionary ad for drunk driving—and without a single memory of the accident that landed her there. But what she can recall, in frank and sardonic detail, is the year leading up to the crash.
As Gabby describes her transformation from Invisible Girl to Trendy Girl Who Dates Billy Nash (aka Most Desirable Boy Ever), she is left wondering: Why is Billy suddenly distancing himself from her? What do her classmates know that Gabby does not? Who exactly was in the car that night? And why has Gabby been left to take the fall? As she peels back the layers of her life, Gabby begins to realize that her climb up the status ladder has been as intoxicating as it has been morally complex...and that nothing about her life is what she has imagined it to be

The Adoration of Jenna Fox (Jenna Fox Chronicles, #1) by Mary E. Pearson.
Who is Jenna Fox? Seventeen-year-old Jenna has been told that is her name. She has just awoken from a year-long coma, and she's still recovering from the terrible accident that caused it. Her parents show her home movies of her life, her memories, but she has no recollection. Is she really the same girl she sees on the screen? Little by little, Jenna begins to remember. Along with the memories come questions—questions no one wants to answer for her. What really happened after the accident?

The Secret Hour (Midnighters, #1) by Scott Westerfeld.
Nobody is safe in the secret hour. Strange things happen at midnight in the town of Bixby, Oklahoma. Time freezes. Nobody moves.
For one secret hour each night, the town belongs to the dark creatures that haunt the shadows. Only a small group of people know about the secret hour -- only they are free to move about the midnight time. These people call themselves Midnighters. Each one has a different power that is strongest at midnight: Seer, Mindcaster, Acrobat, Polymath. For years the Midnighters and the dark creatures have shared the secret hour, uneasily avoiding one another.
All that changes when the new girl with an unmistakable midnight aura appears at Bixby High School. Jessica Day is not an outsider like the other Midnighters. She acts perfectly normal in every way. But it soon becomes clear that the dark creatures sense a hidden power in Jessica . . . and they're determined to stop her before she can use it.

Thoughts

Summaries from Good Reads. I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on all of these! I saw a copy of The Secret Hour by Scott Westerfeld (the author of the Uglies series) in a Charity shop, and I wish I picked it up now... Oh well. For Betwixt, I heard about it via Ya-Aholic as one of her top 2012 books - and I love the looks of it. ^.^ As for the other two, I just think they look incredible. I love all the covers, but my favourite is probably Where It Began's cover - it looks gorgeous. :3

He's pretty sure Obscura has something to do with it, but with his parents' marriage imploding and realities shifting each time he closes his eyes, Kyle has problems enough without being the one in charge of saving the world...

Excerpt

Closing my eyes, I imagine New Mexico burning, can almost smell it, the pungent pine, fireball mesquite, and smouldering cacti. I should be worried about the damage the UV’s doing to my scars, but after tonight, none of that will matter. Just when you think it can’t possibly get any hotter or the mercury will explode, the temperature rises just a few more degrees. Today, Coyote’s Luck lies in a simmering mirage, hotter than any hell imaginable.

The crush of mesquite huddling between the tombstones offers little respite from the sun. Sticking to the dappled shade, I thread my way toward Danny’s grave. I’m not alone.
She looks like a ghost with the white sundress fanning around her legs, her long black hair teased by the warm breeze. For a moment, I think it’s one of the ch’iindi made flesh, until she turns at the sound of my step.

Gabriela, her face a teary-eyed frown. She folds her arms and returns her gaze to the grave. When did she get so thin? She was always so voluptuous, a shorter, less saggy version of her mother. Now she looks more like a sixteen-year-old kid, barely there in layers of cotton.
We stand in silence, both just staring at the grave. The rosaries dangle over the stone, tied in knots around the stems of already dead flowers. There’s a white and blue beaded one, the one that was attached to Danny’s bed, the one he’d kiss at night before going to sleep.
“I miss him so much,” Gabriela says eventually.
“So do I.”
“I blame you, you know.” She casts me a sidelong glance.
“Maybe you should.”
She nods and sniffs and fingers one of the blooms turned brown by the heat.
“Dead, all of it.” She tears the petals from the stalk. “Little Maria, now Daniel.” She turns her dark eyes on me, searching for something I wish I could give her.
“This is killing my parents. Daniel was their only son. They’ll never have more children. Once, I had a brother. Now I’m alone. Sister to dead siblings.”
That’s the most Gabriela’s ever said, to me at least. I’m stunned into uncomfortable silence. There’s nothing I can say that’ll make it right. But tonight, maybe there’ll be something I can do.
“I wish I could make it right.” My words sound so pathetic.
She harrumphs and digs her sandaled toe into the dirt. “Nothing can make Daniel dying right.”
“I’m sorry.” There is nothing else I can say without trying to explain the whole confusing story and Gabriela’s not the type to believe in rifts in reality. “Tell Daniel you’re sorry. He’s the one who died because of you.” She takes a deliberate step away from me, crosses herself, offering prayers in Spanish to the ether.
“I loved him, you know.” Maybe I am to blame, but she makes it sound like I don’t give a crap that he’s dead.
“Obviously not enough.”

Author Interview

1. Do you judge a book by its cover?
All the time. That’s not to say that all my judgements are accurate but a book cover is really important. If I’m standing in a store torn between two books of equal price with equally interesting blurbs, I’ll certainly take the one with the nicer cover - that’s just the way it is.

2. Is there a series you'll read over and over again and never get tired of?
Series? No. I’m not really into series. I find myself often reading the first book and never further. I may make exceptions for trilogies and I’ll have to see how it goes with The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater before changing my mind on book series.

3. What are two of your favorite fictional worlds that you'd like to see together?
Wow - that’s tough. Merging two worlds. Hm... I think Capt. Jack Harkness from Dr Who and Torchwood could just about take on anything and anyone so I’d like to see him take on some comic book heroes. I reckon Capt. Jack should make a guest appearance in The Avengers or X-Men - get Torchwood on the hunt for Magneto or Loki. That could be fun!

4. If you could meet a fictional character, who would it be and why?
It’s a tie between Capt. Jack Harkness and Morpheus, the Sandman and King of Dreams. Capt. Jack because he is awesome and has seen the future and would be infinitely interesting to talk to and Morpheus because he lives inside people’s dreams - I think he’d have a unique perspective on the human condition.

5. How do you feel about book to movies or book to TV shows?
Love them when they’re done well, which isn’t all that often. I’m a bit of purist tending to prefer the book to adaptation but I’m the first to admit that movies like Stardust and Coraline are fantastic and actually improve upon the original books. I think all the Nicholas Sparks movies have been an improvement on the books but the one that wins hands down is The Vampire Diaries. I could never get into the books despite trying more than once. The TV series however? Yeah I’m a total Damon Salvatore fangirl.

6. How many unread books do you have? On your TBR list?
Hundreds. I add more than I can ever hope to read but at least it gives me options. I love the sample function on Amazon - makes life easier being able to scroll through samples on my Kindle and get a taste for the book before purchasing it.

7. What's your favorite book this year?
I read this in November last year but it remains a favorite: Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion. A totally unexpected and brilliant book about zombies. I hope the film adaptation will do it justice!

8. Ebooks or physical books? Which do you prefer?
Ebooks - more practical, lighter, easier to travel with and they save a hell of a lot of shelf space.
